    Shay Given Empty Shay Given

Post by Parks lives Fri Sep 28, 2007 12:45 pm

Heard today that Big Sam wants to bring Jussi to Newcastle either in January but most likely next summer when his contract runs out.

Not sure what is going on with Shay Given, does Big Sam just not rate him? He's even playing Steve Harper in front of him at the moment.

Given's an amazing shot stopper, however maybe there is something he doesn't do that Big Sam doesn't like.

in fairness to Harper he ain't done a lot wrong so far would be a little unfair to drop him, you wouldn't treat an outfield player like that although there are prob more reasons to do it to a keeper

Pretty much agree. No matter how good Given is...Harper shouldn't be dropped until he does something wrong. He made some very good saves against us.

Don't deny Harper has done well, just with Given's legendary status up at Newcastle it is a strange event. Now that Jussi is being looked at, I can't imagine him coming to be a back up keeper and nor should he either, one of the best keepers in the league imo.

I don't see the logic in bringing Jussi into the team, he is of similar age to Shay and similar ability.

Unless Shay has something lined up in January already...

Arsenal were interested last summer I heard, with Lehman's leaving they may come back in for him.

    Given's just a poor man's Cassilas.

This was in the Sun ffs. Laughing

I suspect this is a power thing, Given has BIG status and influence at the club, like Shearer had, and i think Sam is just trying to show that he's the boss and anyone is droppable. I don't see what else it could be, in the past 5 years Harper has probably made twice as many f@ck ups as him in far FAR less games.

He'll come back sooner rather than later, he's too good not to.

Selling Given would probably be the worst move possible in terms of his relationship with the fans. Sell a loyal club legend in his prime, not because he has started making mistakes but because he got injured for the first time ever. I can't see it.

A poor man's Casillas is still a very good keeper.

I quite like Given and would be happy to sign him. I'd rather Akinfeev or Gomes though

Sorry but that is one of the dumbest things I've read in a while. Casillas is among the top 3 goalies in the world. At age 18, he had already benched a world class goalie (Canizares) playing for the best club in the world and kept a clean sheet in a champions league final. No need to go through the rest of his accomplishments. Given is a nobody compared to Casillas.

Ignorance is bliss eh? Rolling Eyes I've no problem with people saying Cassilas is better but it's not by that much. Given is a top class keeper, he's proved is season after season after season. He's a "nobody" compared to no one. ok

They're both 6'1. I've seen Given standing next to Shearer and he looked a bit bigger so that seems right.

I think the height issue is irrelevant (though, incidentally, where I used to sit at Newcastle there was a certain group of people around me who, for a long time at least, were critical of Given for not dominating enough on corners, which was related somewhat to his height - I think Given has improved with age for a start, and that the point was never especially valid), and how Given compares to Casillas is not really to the point. For me, Given is an excellent keeper and I agree with Kimbo in that he is the only player we have at the moment who could rightfully be called a club legend - for his ability, his loyalty, the fact that hes been a shining light of professionalism and quality in years where that has been lacking.

I maybe rate Harper a little more than Kimbo - I think he has shown loyalty to the club too (I recall, rightly or wrongly, that Celtic were strongly linked with him a few seasons ago), and been a top class back up to the point where we have arguably had the best strength in terms of keepers in the whole league. And because of that, when he has come in and done well, it is particularly hard to drop him. That said, I think Given is significantly the better keeper and should be starting still.

In a sense Allardyce may have given himself a little problem in that, had he brought Given back straight away, there would have been no real arguments. The fact that he hasnt has lead to various rumours, and it also might make Harper a little more disgruntled if he is eventually dropped. Still, hes probably glad for the games he has had, and Given may well continue in goal now after the Arsenal game, in which he seemed to perform very well. Certainly I think theres little chance he will leave - Jaaskelainen is not a better keeper, the fans appreciate Given and there is no chance he would arrange a move elsewhere. If we were to sell him it would, like Kimbo said, be the closest thing possible to the concept of selling Shearer; in a similar vein, it would remind me of Robson selling Speed, which was always a terrible mistake.

Harper is a good shotstopper and a very good back up, but i cringe whenever the ball is played back to him, his kicking is terrible - see the first minute against West Ham. He's an accident waiting to happen i reckon. If we were to lose Given over this it would be unforgivable in my eyes.
