Mackem Keane V Irish LEGEND Shay Empty Mackem Keane V Irish LEGEND Shay

Post by Kimbo Tue Mar 27, 2007 12:36 pm

Roy Keane has claimed that Shay Given has played too many games for Republic of Ireland because the Newcastle keeper is looking for a 'pat on the back'.

Given will equal Packie Bonner's record of 80 caps for an Irish goalkeeper in Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Slovakia, but former team-mate Keane has welcomed the landmark in his unique outspoken style.

Keane claims that Given should have given other goalkeepers an opportunity to play during friendlies, rather than looking to accrue as many caps as possible.

"I think players have agendas - certain players come over all the time no matter what," Keane told The Sun.

"Maybe they want to get 50 or 100 caps and a pat on the back for it.

"I think Shay's one of those ones - he wants to get 200 caps. Shay seems to have played every game - even friendlies.

"You have other keepers, who travel all the time. Then, when they do play, they're taken off.

"I've always thought, when it comes to the lads who travel all the time, 'give them a game'.

"Qualifiers you have to win - but with friendly matches, give the lads who travel a game and don't be changing them at half-time, give them a full game."

Keane has been forthright in his views regarding the Irish setup in recent weeks, claiming that star names have not been performing to expectations and that Cork-based players are discriminated against.

His most recent claims have not been welcomed by Bonner, who has defended Given for his professionalism.

"Shay is a fantastic ambassador for his country," said Bonner.

"He wants to play for his country and it's got nothing to do with pats on the back.

"He does not want to relinquish that number one shirt and I'm delighted he's equalling my record."

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unbelievable comments from the red and white moron today.

Shay plays well for his country game after game after game, even when he's carrying an injury, so why shouldn't he play the friendlies?!?! And where the fuck does Keane get off talking about the national team as if he's some sort of authority on the subject? He walked out on them when they needed him the most, i'm sure the irish fans haven't forgotten that.

He should stick to talking about mackem business, the attention seeking small time git. <Ale>

I suspect he's probably bitter about the 2002 world cup, Keane threw his toys out of his pram and stormed off home to mummy while Shay was kicking arse and impressing everyone on the biggest stage of them all. ok Ale

Silly comments. I think some are blinded by his influence in his playing days.

Commited players like Shay should be praised for their devotion to his Nation. Republic of Ireland don't have many other keepers to try out in friendlies. Well unless you consider Kenny or Kiely as genuin International class, which I don't.

He does obviously carry a grudge against players like Shay, as we have seen it in the past as well.

Its a shame because he has performed miracles at Sunderland this season and in an interview recently he came across very well. He is only harming his country with these comments.

For Man Utd, what did he do for Ireland?! He obviously feels jealous of Shays caps. Anyway it's not Givens fault, he can hardly tell the manager "no, play the other bloke", why not have a go at the manager if he feels the need to have a pop? Rolling Eyes

While he might have a point, it is up to the Irish manager to decide who is going to play in a friendly. Surely it is a good thing that Given shows the commitment to turn up. The manager could always give another keeper a tryout in a friendly, so if he wants to criticise someone for it, it should be the manager, not the player.

Strange comments, so Keane thinks Given should let someone else play even when he is fit, absolute nonscence. It's great to see players show true commitment to their country, I bet most Wales fans would love to see Ryan Giggs show as much commitment when it comes to playing friendly matches

Roy Keane, should fuck off with his agendas. It's got nothing to do with Given, what player when picked by the national manager would say "oh, not today thanks, why dont you play the other guy? I dont want to play".

ok It was a real team effort.

Jason McAteer scored the crucial goal vs. Holland!!!
