The tower from the River Weser

Werder Bremen have really been hit by injuries this season.

It even got so worse that the skipper's armband ended up with Per Mertesacker for the away match at VfL Wolfsburg (1-1).

    Everyone injured, armband for "Merte"

The defender normally is only deputy for Tim Borowski, who is deputy for Torsten Frings, who is deputy for Frank Baumann - well, you get the idea.

But at the end it might have been fitting that "Merte" wore the armband in the end.

    Ever-present

After all the towering defender has been instrumental in Werder's march up the table following a poor start to the season.

Mertesacker, who won the first of his 35 caps for Germany in Tehran on October 9th 2004, has figured in every minute of Bundesliga action so far this term: seven matches, 630 minutes.

    Good build-up play

And that's to the Hanseatics' advantage, for the former Hannover 96 player is a real role model of consistency and important for Bremen's build-up play.

87% of his 318 passes this season have reached a team-mate, a respectable proportion.

    No way past Mertesacker

Even more important, of course, is the 22-year-old (who turns 23 on September 29) in defence.

85% duels won this season is a percentage most other central defenders can only dream about for a lifetime.

    Sportsmanlike behaviour

And all that without dirty tricks: just four fouls in seven matches are convincing proof that Mertesacker is a fair sportsman.

Four blocked shots, 58 clearances and 14 attacks stopped also underline that "Merte" is one of the top defenders in Germany and Europe.

    No goal yet

However, Mertesacker is yet to score this season - none of his four attempts found the back of the net.

But that may come - maybe even before he has to hand back the skipper's armband.

    Second place at stake

Schalke 04 entertain Hertha BSC in Friday's Bundesliga match. bundesliga.de offers the latest information on the top clash.

Schalke have their confidence back after successive wins over Bielefeld (3-0) and Duisburg (2-0).

    Gilding a successful week

"We're on a run and we want to extend it in order to establish ourselves in the upper regions of the table", Schalke coach Mirko Slomka demands ahead of the match against Hertha BSC (Friday, 20:30).

Striker Kevin Kuranyi wants to "gild" the successful week and midfielder Zlatan Bajramovic promised the fans to stay at Bayern's heels.

    Varela back in the squad

Gerald Asamoah (foot injury) is doubtful, but Gustavo Varela could make his comeback after seven months on the sidelines. The Uruguayan had tore cruciate ligaments in February - when Schalke played Hertha.

The euphoria at Hertha has been dampened by the 3-1 home defeat to Rostock. "We want to make up for that against Schalke", says Hertha skipper Arne Friedrich.

Schalke have kept a clean sheet in five of their last six home matches against Hertha, but the Berliners' problems are first of all in defence with eleven goals already conceded.

    Line-ups as expected:

Schalke: Neuer - Rafinha, Westermann, Bordon, Pander - Jones, Ernst, Bajramovic - Rakitic - Kuranyi, Altintop

Hertha: Drobny - Chahed, Friedrich, von Bergen, Fathi - Mineiro (Ebert), Dardai, Gilberto, Lucio - Grahn - Pantelic

    Gledson suffers ankle injury

Shortly before the end of training yesterday, VfB defender Gledson picked up a knock. In a tackle, the Brazilian damaged ligaments in his right ankle. The 28 year old will be forced to rest up for a few days and will not be available to the team for Saturday's game against Hansa Rostock.

    Podolski kontert Hoeneß-Kritik

    Eurosport - Fr 28.Sep. 14:22:00 2007

It's strange that there is a Bundesliga match tonight when there was a full round of fixtures in midweek. At least it gives me something to watch if the rugby turns bad!

I'm watching the game on GolTV now. Even game so far, Hertha are playing quite well considering they are away from home.

Out of interest, how do they decide which games are on tv on the Friday and Sunday? In England it would be decided by the tv companies, is it the same in Germany or is it more randomly selected?

Great start to this game. Ze Roberto forced a fine low save from the Leverkusen goalkeeper, and Barnetta has just fired a shot from distance against the post.

    -------

Wow, Klose fires a shot that hits the crossbar and bounces down well over the line before bouncing out, but the goal isn't given. Dreadful decision not to award the goal. Leverkusen nearly score breaking up the other end. This has been such an entertaining start to the match. Is anyone else watching it?
