Italy vs. Spain - which league has better strikers Empty Italy vs. Spain - which league has better strikers

Post by fcb Wed Oct 10, 2007 9:21 pm

I think it's tough to pick between the two...Spain has a lot of good goalscorers, though you could argue that they look better because of the nature of the league. My thinking (not based on stats, so I may be wrong) is this - strikers in Spain score more goals, but strikers in Italy seem to score better goals.

So which criterion is more powerful in choosing the league with better strikers?
I guess one other way would be to do it by a player-to-player comparison of all the strikers in each league.

I would choose La Liga because its got 3 former Man Utd strikers player there, Forlan, Ruud and Rossi. Very Happy

Serie A has got some good strikers but most of them play for the same team.

Inter Milan: Ibrahimovic, Crespo, Suazo, Cruz, Adriano.

You will be surprised to learn that you are factually incorrect... Serie A strikers score more goals than their La Liga counterparts, at least in the last 3-4 years...

Its a very tough call, but I think Serie A edges this race only coz they have a better supply of homegrown strikers... tho a few of them have left in the summer, but Italy produces an amazing number of quality strikers... there was this survey done earlier this season of the top 50 italian strikers and young prodigies like Palladino, Rossi, Pelle & Pazzini didn't make the top 20!! I call this the Baggio inspired generation, last 5 years have seen a dramatic change in the number of italian strikers... and a few maldini inspired left backs (Pasqual, Chiellini, Molinaro, Criscito, etc)!! Too bad Baresi & bergomi didn't inspire enuf, ;( but maybe Cannavaro and Nesta will in the future...

And people think Serie A is defensive!! Shocked

Who would be the top 10 from Spain and Italy?

maybe we can compare them, e.g.

    Messi vs Ibrahimovic
    Ruud vs Crepso
    Villa vs Mutu
    Eto'o vs Ronaldo
    Raul vs Del Piero

    etc...

If it was Italian or Spanish strikers then definitely Italian (Italy and Nigeria seem to be the best countries for forwards).

But La Liga v Serie A is very tough and could make a good case either way.

This is not completely unrelated... coz if you look at the entire league, all teams, then in both Serie A and La Liga a large number of strikers are citizens... over the last decade, with the large exodus of top foriegners (from a time when most of them used to play in Italy), the italian clubs have more and more relied on local talent... and thats exactly what is still keeping the league competitive...

The quality of foriegners is now better in England and spain, coz of more money, but Serie A manages to hold its own coz of better local talent than those leagues...

Being the devils advocate (Tweed) Forlan,Kanoute.
Perhaps the question should be why EPL strikers do well In La Liga recently.
Ruud,Forlan,Kanoute,OWen(he was goodish),Sinama and now Rossi.

I think the explanation for that is simple:

    - Van Nistelrooy and Owen are top goalscorers and will score in any league or level.

    - Forlan, Rossi, and Sinama never got a proper chance. In Sinama's case, a mid-table side is probably his best level. And for the first two, they were also playing without the pressure they had at Man. Utd. And Forlan is a conventional South American player in that it's very hard to play in the Premiership as opposed to La Liga.

    - Kanoute is the only one that is surprising, and maybe that's because he wasn't used properly in England? What I'm suggesting is that he may have been used as a conventional English target man, and while he can do some of that, it seems he's more comfortable with the ball on the ground and at his feet.

Forlan was let go of when he was far from the finished article. Forlan of the last few seasons would have been a success in any league in the world.

    Ditto Rossi.

    Ditto Sinama.

Neither are yet the finished product anyway.

Horse was definitely not a reject, any EPL squad would have loved to have him (except one manager). Oh OK, we at Arsenal wouldn't want any part of him either. good riddance, horse is.

Henry will not have been a reject either, guarding against when one says the same thing about him when he becomes a huge succes <Ale> ok with Barca.

    And that leaves you Kanoute.

So let's reframe the question. Why was Kanoute not as big a success in the EPL as he is in La Liga? And I think this question has been done to death.
