Brazil to host 2014 World Cup Empty Brazil to host 2014 World Cup

Post by Machiavel Tue Oct 30, 2007 3:22 pm

FIFA have confirmed Brazil as hosts for the 2014 World Cup finals.

The South American nation was the only bidding country, and the announcement by world football's governing body came as no surprise.

They become the fifth country to host two World Cups following Mexico (1970 and 1986), France (1938 and 1998), West Germany/Germany (1974 and 2006) and Italy (1934 and 1990).

Brazil, who have won the World Cup a record five times and are the only country to have played in all 18 World Cup finals tournaments, last staged the event in 1950.

They become the first South American hosts since Argentina staged and won the 1978 World Cup finals.

Brazil were the only country nominated to bid for the World Cup by the South American confederation (CONMEBOL) whose turn it was to stage the finals after they were awarded to Europe (Germany) in 2006 and Africa (South Africa) in 2010.

Eighteen cities have bid to stage matches, and, according to the FIFA inspection report published last week, it is envisaged that between eight to 10 cities will host games.

However, the report, while giving the bid its blessing, says that none of the stadiums are currently up to FIFA safety standards for staging World Cup matches.

That includes the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, which held a world crowd of 199,000 for the 1950 final.

Brazil were the only contenders because of FIFA's policy of rotating World Cups through its six continental confederations, a strategy that was scrapped on Monday.

More than 160 Brazilian delegation members and media were in Zurich for Tuesday's announcement including the President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Romario, a member of Brazil's 1994 World Cup winning team, and Dunga, who captained the side in 1994 and is now the national coach.

Pele, however, who was in Brazil's winning World Cup teams of 1958 and 1970, was not with the delegation. He has not endorsed Brazil's World Cup hosting aspirations in the past.

May to July is winter in Brazil so it will be very cold in the south of Brazil and will probably rain in the north.

I hope Uruguay win it again here. That would be beautiful and funny. They become giants playing in Brazil.

    @Parks

Juligen is right, world cups in South America are much cooler than the WCs in Europe because it's winter here.

It will be cold in the south (between 5 and 25 degrees) and not so hot in the north (between 18 and 30 degrees).

Sheva, the government won't spend money directly. They will have to improve the infrastructure of the cities, which is their role anyway.

And the country won't lose any money on this. Quite the contrary, there will be much more money coming in through tourism, ads, etc. A WC is very profitable for any host country.

And do not forget the publicity of the country all around the world during the years before the WC. Brands like Nike, Coca-Cola, etc. pays fortunes to have their names on shirts and on TV. Brazil will have its name on shirts and TVs and ads all around the world for free, increasing tourism from abroad, bringing more money to the country even before and after the WC.

    Brazil has nothing to lose.

And don't come telling me about the Pan-American games. the Pan-Am games stand to the WC as a high-school football cup stands to the Libertadores da América.

Strange how so many people here in Brazil are saying that we shouldn't spend money on something like football when we need so much on education, helth, etc, as if we were "buying" something, when the truth is that we are earning it. At least in theory, we won't spend public money, but we'll use it to make new tube lines, to improve motorways, airports, etc. How can someone be against it?

As I've said, I'm sure it will be excelent for Brazil, but I'm not sure if it will be good for the WC. They'll need to deal with some problems to hold a good WC:

Violence: not such a big problem IMO. I think people exagerate a bit. As a Brazilian citizen who do not have a car and walk a lot at night in the biggest city of the country, I can say I'm never afraid, and that I've never been robbed nor felt threatened.

However, I know the situation of the "favelados" is very different (call the BOPE!!), and that gringos are easier targets for thieves than us Brazilians.

Moreover, we do not have islamic terrorists like in Europe to worry about. The arab community here is totally mixed with Brazilian Catholics and even with the Jews. There is no religion tension in Brazil.

Transports: a big problem IMO. São Paulo is probably the only city in Brazil that has a really good underground system, and the bus systems are poor. The interstate roads and motorways in the south are good, but in the north are terrible, and there is no interstate railway system for passengers.

Stadia: another big problem. we don't have one single stadium that could stage a WC match today. All the stadiums will have to be extensively repaired.

corruption: Biggest problem of all. Our football is run by bandits and falling to pieces. If they decide to use the WC as a means to enrich themselves even more, I'm afraid things won't work and FIFA will have to change the host country a couple of years before the WC.

But there was also a lot of corruption in Germany involving the construction or repairment of the stadia. I just hope those fuckers will keep corruption and robbery to a low level at least.

    www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/esporte/ult92u341281.shtml

I don't think that violence is a big problem. I feel safe here too. Foreigners won't have much trouble as long as they stay away from favelas.

Rio, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte traffic is awful.

I agree with you, corruption is the biggest problem. Brazilian politics and FA directors are very corrupt.

Brazil to host 2014 World Cup Empty Re: Brazil to host 2014 World Cup

Post by Juligen Thu Nov 01, 2007 3:32 pm

Yesterday, for the first time since it was announced that Brazil will host the WC in 2014 I felt bad about the idea, and it had nothing to do it with Stadia, money or security. For God sakes we are the 12º economy in the World, with a GDP passing the US$ 1 trillion mark,we have the money and the government support and this will be great for our country.

The problem is that the media here is already talking how players like Robinho, Kaka and Ronaldinho would still be young in 2014 and could easily play for Brazil seven years from now, and that’s is VERY worrying. You just know that those players (and others ) will try everything to play this cup in Brazil (não vão querer largar o osso)

We have a new generation emerging right now with Pato, Denilson, Lucas, Anderson, Lulinha, Breno, Alex etc. and I don’t want to see 06WC all over again, an old team that refuse to give space to a new generation.
Brazil always produces great players and always will, the problem is how we are going to use this talent.

If we make the same mistake that we did in 2006 and let our “stars” decide once again who plays for our team and who doesn’t then I am supporting Uruguay. Evil or Very Mad
