Sven's record was OK he just didn't manage to get them to a semi, probably cos ultimately the players just weren't good enough.
To judge whether Redknapp is the man by comparison to McClaren is a pointless exercise, you or I couldn't have done much worse than SMc. Harry is a v good EPL manager, but imho he just wouldn't be able to make the transition from club to country. Although he's still one of the best ENGLISH candidates. personally i don't see there is one english candidate capable of doing the job, but if thats what the neglish want there is defo a lot worse than HR but i think you'd be looking at another poor qualifying campaign

Sven did ok if you look at it from one way.
But it's things he did rather than results which are the reasons for him being seen as an idiot.
Bringing Walcott, constantly trying to see out a 1-0 win and it backfiring, bringing on carragher to take that penalty.
I could see harry saying i'll bring 19 players, and 4 specialist penalty takers. Aint making no mistake this time around. He plays the right football, has a good relationship with the media, i cant see the players not playing for him, the only bad thing is he is sort of seen as a joke figure, but he's proving every year he is a very good manager.

Harry hails Lampard
Harry Redknapp believes Frank Lampard is the most complete midfielder in the game - and a shining example to any aspiring young player.
Some people might accuse the Portsmouth boss of bias in light of the fact that Lampard is his nephew.
But he rubbishes such claims and insists no player deserves success more than Lampard, who goes in search of more goals as revitalised Chelsea host Everton today.
Redknapp gave him his first break in football at West Ham and witnessed first hand his drive, commitment, and dedication.
And he said: "Let me tell you, noone deserves to be a success more than Frank Lampard. He wasn't a naturally talented world-class player, he turned himself into one.
"I've never seen dedication like it. We had an extremely talented bunch of players at West Ham, but no one could come close to Frank in terms of where he was and where he wanted to be.
"If I had a talented young player on my books, the first thing I would do would be to tell them to study Frank Lampard. When all the other players left training Frank would stay behind for hours working on his running, his fitness and his shooting.
"It didn't matter whether it was pouring down with rain and freezing, nothing deterred him. All he was interested in was making it as a professional and being the best he could."
Redknapp doesn't buy into claims that Lampard became a great player only when he joined Chelsea.
"That's absolute garbage. Chelsea didn't go out and pay £12million for a player with potential. Frank was scoring goals for us in midfield on a regular basis. The difference now is he's older, more mature and playing with world-class players.
"A nicer lad you couldn't wish to meet as well. He doesn't have a malicious bone in his body."
Redknapp also claims few players have skin as thick as Frank's, adding: "I've seen some of the scandalous stick he's taken and I've seen players' confidence destroyed by it.
"But it goes right over the top of Frank. Naturally he's disappointed at some of the reaction - a large majority of it is coming from minority support following England.
"But they could scream from the top of that ridiculous arch at Wembley and it would make no difference.
"Exceptional players are able to completely switch off from any adverse reaction from the crowd. It would be something if I could get my head around why.
"But last year he was voted the best England player by the supporters so none of it makes any sense to me."
As it doesn't that critics claim Lampard can't play in the same England team as Steve Gerrard.
"That is complete stupidity. Any manager who says that shouldn't be in the job.
"If I was England coach I'd play the two together every time. They are two of the most formidable midfield players in the world."
Go Harry

That has to be a contender for "most dumbest quotes by a Premiership manager". It almost rivals this:
RAFA BENITEZ believes Steven Gerrard will rule the world in Germany this summer.
The Liverpool captain is in the best form of his life after his summer decision to commit himself to the European champions for another four years.
And Benitez has warned the Brazilians, Argentines, French and Italians that Gerrard will prove himself one to be one of the best players in the world on the biggest stage of all.
Benitez said: "The key player for us this season has been Steven Gerrard.
"You've seen him score a lot of goals and he's been the big difference for us.
"I said last season all the talk about his future was bad for his game, but now he is settled and he will go to Germany next summer as a more complete player able to analyse and dominate games.
"He has grown up. He has matured into a fine player, but he is also willing to listen and learn - and he will get even better.
"If you asked football fans around the world who is the best player in the world, a lot of them would say Steven Gerrard.
"That is no disrespect to Ronaldinho, because he deserved to be the World Player of the Year, but Gerrard is also up there."
Benitez reckons Gerrard can win football's ultimate prize this summer, he refuses to accept that this season will be regarded as a failure if Liverpool don't win a trophy.
He said: "I am building a team to win trophies in the future. We have closed the gap on Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United and if we continue to progress I'll be happy."

Sorry S4P, but it is true though...the headline is obviously made up by the paper, but the rest is Benitez saying "Gerrard *can* do this and *may* do that"...obviously he didn't, but nothing wrong with Benitez dreaming. The only thing I'm not sure about is "he is willing to listen and learn"
And Ronaldinho certainly deserved to win WPOTY and the Balon d'Or. Gerrard being "up there" (ie. 2nd or 3rd or whatever) is the closest he would have got to Ronaldinho in that form.

'I want Russia to qualify,' says Israel coach
England suffered a Euro bombshell last night when one of Israel’s coaches confessed: “I want Russia to qualify.”
Incredibly, he also admitted Israel plan to field a team of unknown youngsters on Saturday.
The astonishing claim will stun England boss Steve McClaren, who is depending on Israel to at least draw against Russia in Tel Aviv — and keep alive our slim hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals.
Israel keeper coach Alexander Ubarov, 47, said: “I would like Russia to qualify for the Euros — and for them that means winning in Israel.
“I told them it’s not going to be easy — they’ll have to be totally prepared. In the 16 years I have been involved with the Israeli squad, we have never done anything but to try our best in every single match.
“I would like Russia to qualify — but only if it means that they deserve to.
“Everything will be decided on the pitch, nowhere else.”
Ubarov is a Russia-born former Soviet Union international keeper who has gained Israeli citizenship.
But he is in constant contact with his native land and appears intimately informed about the Russian preparations for the Group E crunch showdown.
He added: “It’s a game of life and death for the Russians as far as them qualifying.
“A win over Israel will bring them to Austria next summer. They’ve flown to Cyprus ahead of the game to try and relieve some of the pressure. They’ll arrive here only a day ahead of the game.”
Ubarov says the Russians are delighted that Israel’s Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun will miss the match with a groin injury.
Ubarov added: “I got so many calls from Russia, asking about Benayoun.
“They are really scared of him, so I guess it was good for them to see he will not be playing. It’s a real shame he won’t be playing.
“When he was still playing for Racing Santander in Spain, many teams in Russia wanted him.
“Anyway, his absence will provide an opportunity for some of our other talents to shine.”
Ubarov revealed Israel boss Dror Kashtan will include a few inexperienced youngsters in his line-up to give them some big-match experience. He added: “There will be new players in the team who will want to prove themselves.”
Speaking to Israeli sports website ONE, he added: “The game is at home so, basically, we have nothing to lose.
“We may have some youngsters on the pitch — the kind of players that would give it all since they are eager to prove themselves.”
In another bodyblow to England, Israel defender Yoav Ziv insisted he could not care less if the Three Lions qualify.
He said: “All we have to play for is our respect and make our country and fans happy. But we’re not working for England. I am not interested if they qualify or not. I play for Israel, not England.”
