I still cannot believe how easily this group has landed in McClaren's lap. It's the equivalent of say, in golf, driving into the rough on an adjacent course then having a bird pick your ball up in its beak and drop it next to the hole. All McClaren has to do it tap it in. Careful. Just tap it in.

But if he gets stick for the 0-0 with Macedonia, the 1-2 v Russia and the 0-2 v Croatia then surely he should get praise for the fine 3-0 wins over Israel and Russia which brought us back into contention ?

Yes he should. What price Stevie Gerrard showing why he is rated by the media as 'world class' and driving England to a storming win.

<Ale> Israel deserve some respect, they do have a very good home record and England also didn't win in their country. They are not the greatest team but nowhere near as bad as some people thought. And they won without Yossi!

Russia are overhyped on here too...probably because they have a Dutch manager...

They won 2-1 with a dodgy penalty...and were soundly beaten 3-0 at Wembley...

They were now beaten 2-1 by Israel...who drew in Moscow. Some idiots say that Russia are a better team than England Laugh

Yes and France couldn't beat them at all in WC qualification.

Russian football after the fall of the USSR was in the doldrums (more or less everything in Russia) there are signs of potential players like Akinfeev, Arshavin and Kerzhakov can help establish Russia as a force in European Football. As for the Israel game, Russia could have destroyed them with the amount of chances they had in the second half simply dominated the proceedings the mistake IMO was focusing on the attack for the expense of the defence in the second half (they had to go all out for the win) and “defensive elapse in concentration” cost them the game and Israel hit the sucker punch. This is Football, Russia have no complaints.
