Martin Samuel, who is this guy? Empty Martin Samuel, who is this guy?

Post by Puro Sun Nov 25, 2007 8:06 pm

I was watching a football debate show on Setanta called "Football Matters", and this fellow Samuel talks a lot of sense. He's not afraid to call it like it is. You guys need more pundits like this fellow instead of the Motsons, Grays, Hansens, Pleats and the rest of dumbasses you know.

There were two other guests besides Samuel. There was some dude from News of The World who sounded like Hansen calling Gerrard and Lampard the best central midfielders in the world. Samuel almost cracked up. Biggrin

The guy from NOTW was shown the door or something because he wasn't around for the remainder of the program. There was another guy, older fellow with gray hair who talked a lot of sense as well. When the host asked him "surely the EPL is on par with La Liga and Serie A?" He said that the EPL only has a few good teams that everyone knows, and that even when these teams play one another, their matches aren't as sophisticated as the top matches in La Liga and Serie A. He said the Barcelona-Real Madrid match seems like from another planet in comparison. DAAAMMNN! Shocked

You do have some great pundits who call it like it is like Samuel and that other fellow. Unfortunately they're not shown nearly as much as the dumbasses everyone knows. <Ale>

Well he used to work for the newsoftheworld himself, and thesun. He was just another person who overated the likes of lampard and gerrard. He sometimes writes good things and speaks sense so kudos to him if he's finally changed his opinion, but in general i don't rate him or his articles they're mostly full of shite. <Ale>

He's one of the better ones out there, he also does articles for The Times, which is very reputable.

Media bashing about the national team is very much in at the moment, around 2006 everyone including Samuel was hailing "the golden generation".

No, is he from The Telegraph? Does anyone watch Football Matters? I was pleasantly surprised with their insights. Is it always that good or was it just a one off like LRD and Cesc say just everyone jumping on the bandwagon all of a sudden because England didn't qualify? <Ale>

    Yes thats him.

Don't watch Football Matters, thats on Setanta over here. The Supplement is a similar style of program. Samuel is a regular on that as well.

I know about that Simon Barnes. He's from The Times as well, and he is one of them with the Beckham hype. I wouldn't be surprised if Barnes is on Beck's PR payroll. A while ago, probably two years ago, Barnes wrote that Beckham "is the best passer in the world". Biggrin <Ale>

Football365 had a section where they highlighted some of the inconsistencies in his articles a while back:

    Re-Writing History
'After inconvenient truths, an inconvenient theory: England need Lampard in Moscow, where a repeat of the 4-3-3 formation deployed against Russia at Wembley is required and the central midfield area needs strengthening' - Martin Samuel in The Times, October 15.

'England should have played 3-5-2 in Moscow on Wednesday, or at least should have been able to' - Martin Samuel in The Times, October 19.

    Tactical Genius
Not only is Samuel a Frank Lampard-obsessed buffoon, he also clearly doesn't watch games all that closely, or even read his own match reports:

'His best result, the 3-0 win at home against Russia, was played using a 4-3-3 system with Shaun Wright-Phillips on the right and Emile Heskey shuttling to the left' - Martin Samuel's column in The Times on October 19.

'It was McClaren's call to pair Heskey with Owen, having initially left him out of his squad, and that partnership has transformed England's past two games' - Martin Samuel's match report of the England v Russia game in The Times on September 13.

Mentions of the 4-3-3 formation that nobody but Samuel spotted on the night: None.

If he writes for a broadsheet he will talk of the sophistication of Italian football - if he's writing for a tabloid it will be "England have world class players in every position".

I disagree with most of Sameul's opinions but he's a good writer.

You sounds suprised - the old chestnut about the EPL being less "sophisticated" than Serie A and La Liga has been around since the dawn of time. Hardly a ground breaking concept; however sophisticated or not, the EPL more than holds its own both in the UEFA and CL so unless the Serie A and La Liga clubs are being nice and giving everyone else a chance, it means f@ck all <Ale>

I suppose we're all like that - we make subtle changes in our behaviour depending on who you're around. No-one talks to their Grandma or Partners parents the same way they talk to their mates, for example.

I watch Sunday Supplement (used to be called Jimmy Hill's Sunday Supplement with Hill hosting it until Sky sacked him Sad ) from time to time. Patrick Barclay - not sure who he writes for, Sunday Times? - has been good the times I've seen him.

I like the Guardian coverage best - good writers like Kevin McCarra and Richard Williams. They do a twice weekly podcast chaired by James Richardson which is very funny as well as informative. They cover not only English footbball but Bundesliga, La Liga (the wonderful Sid Lowe), and Serie A (Jimbo himself usually). There should be one later today, it's worth a listen.
