I wonder if Woodgate has simply gone to London to rekindle old friendships, with Jenas perhaps, but more to the point with the likes of Dyer. Perhaps there are more bridges and beers in Newcastle than there are in Middlesbrough, but then there are more again in London. How long until he's found there under one with the other? Maybe some of this is just rumour and now speculation, but there is a darkness to Woodgate's eyes which shows that he has known and been intimate with the devil, and considering this, it's hard not to think that this transfer might end up cursing Tottenham for all of the foreseeable future.
Seriously, as I've said, I think it's difficult to judge the signing because it involves a decent amount of money for a player who might not play that often. And Woodgate's time at Middlesbrough hasn't been hugely impressive - he has been injured less, he hasn't had court cases to worry about, and he should have made himself indispensable to them, but instead they seem relatively relaxed about letting him go, without much of a profit, after only one year.
In this respect a move away from the north east might help him, and Ramos seems to be doing a very good job with Tottenham. If Woodgate is fit and focuses on the game, he is one of the best defenders around. I don't think it's much of an issue that both he and King are footballers rather than no-nonsense types - like I've said, Woodagate has this wonderful calming influence on a defence, leads without shouting, and makes those around him look good because he reads the game so well, is such an accomplished player.
