Trivia question

This was on The Times' website, and I have no clue what the answer is, but am too curious to wait till tomorrow...so, does anyone know the answer?


Question - Within the past ten years, a Premier League club played an FA Cup match against lower-division opponents who had already lost in that season’s competition; then, four days later, that same Premier League club lost a League Cup tie yet subsequently progressed in the competition. Name the Premier League club.

Played the lucky losers of the 3rd round of the FA Cup (Darlington) due to ManU withdrawing from the cup. Then played West Ham in the league cup, lost on pens but the game got replayed due to West Ham fielding an ineligible player (Omoyinmi). We won the replayed game in extra time.

Thank God someone got it. It was driving me crazy.

I'm surprised at myself that I don't remember WH getting disqualified. It was a pretty big deal at the time.

Here's another one - you may have heard it, but I only came across it recently.

It is technically possible (though highly unlikely) for a player to score three goals, without any other player touching the ball between the first and last goals being scored. How?

He scores, then two times in a row the defending team give the ball away allowing him to score.

But when the player scores his first goal dont the opposing team have to touch it at the restart?

I thought it may just be his team that don't touch the ball.

Something to do with penalties I reckon.

then ref gives a penalty immediately at next kick off because he played advantage.

Then the other team force the game to be abandoned and a further goal is awarded post game.

No, no other player touches the ball.

(I did say it was highly unlikely to really happen).

I remember it yeah...Omoyinimi was registered to play for another club in the cup while on loan. He didn't play...but we then used him for the last 4/5 minutes of our game, and we had to replay after winning.

Actually no I will keep you waiting till tomorrow - sorry guys but it'll take a few minutes to type and I really have to get a couple of things done before I leave work.

How about a team are losing by 2 goals in extra time. The player scores to pull one back. The other team don't take the centre kick in adequate time and are done for time-wasting. The player then scores an amazing free kick which draws it level. He then scores the first penalty of the shoot-out.

He scores an own goal. He restarts by thwacking the ball but it bounces off the referee into his own goal. He restarts again and kicks it straight into the opposition goal.

or he scores an own goal, takes the kickoff and scores directly from the kick off in the opposition goal. Half time takes a kickoff again and scores directly from the kick off.

But you don't you need the "double" touch, i.e. the pass to the teammate, at a kick off before you can score?

It doesn't mention it in law 8, just says you can't pass it to yourself. No doubt a referee would know. Not sure we have any on here.
