There was a consensus going around that Roma had a better team and will progress (I think) more so after the 2:1 defeat in Rome. It was somewhat understandable back then such knee jerkiness occurred as Manchester United in the last 4 seasons have not had the best campaigns in the Champions League, but nevertheless seriously underrated.
Perhaps on this board. Roma were out of form, had key players unable to play and the majority of the squad lacked major CL experience. I don't see how anyone could see Roma as favourites, particularly the English media.
The English media of course had Manchester United as favourites, always nice to be nationalistic. My knowledge of Italian football in recent years is not as strong as some on here, so unless its ‘blind patriotism’ I don’t know. The Chivu & Mexes > Rio & Vidic comparisons was just crazy, and humorous to say the least.
Watching the Roma – Milan game, it’s fair to say Manchester United has to take one of possibly limited chances. Like against Lyon a goal is fundamental, can’t afford to settle the tie at Old Trafford. Not sure if Roma took the earlier game in Rome this season seriously but I can see Manchester United creating one or two chances.
