    Fully deserved ok

When we talk about the greatest player of this generation, we usually talk about Zidane, Ronaldo or Ronaldinho.... but this guy, rarely mentioned, is probably the greatest player of the last 2 decades.

Maldini To Be Awarded FIFA Order Of Merit
FIFA is to bestow the Order of Merit on AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, the Gazzetta dello Sport has revealed. The FIFA Order of Merit is usually awarded to those who are considered to have made a significant contribution to football. The prize is not necessarily just for footballers, as apart from the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and the only other Italian to have won the award so far, Dino Zoff, political figures such as Nelson Mandela and Henry Kissinger have also been recipients. Maldini will become only the second Italian to win the award, following in the footsteps of 1982 World Cup-winning captain Dino Zoff.

The 39-year-old Maldini will receive the honour at the annual FIFA Congress in Sydney next month. The Milan captain is set to retire from football at the end of the season after a glorious career lasting almost a quarter-of-a-century. He has won seven Scudetti, one Coppa Italia, five Italian Super Cups, five Champions League titles, five European Super Cups and three World Club Cups. He is both Milan and Italy’s all-time appearance maker, and is regarded by some as the best defender in the history of the game.

I think Fiorentina might get a thrashing!

I hope Roma get as many poinst as we do this weekend. If we win (which we most likely will, this is our easiest remaining game), I hope Roma also win or at least draw... I want the title to be decided in the derby the following week Wink

Italy roundup-Fiorentina weary for big Samp clash

Fiorentina’s flight back from their 0-0 draw with Rangers in the UEFA Cup semi-final first leg was diverted to Bologna because of fog. Coach Cesare Prandelli had already been worried about tiredness ahead of Sunday’s home match against Sampdoria with both sides chasing a Champions League spot.

“We have little time to recover but I have faith in the skill and professionalism of these lads,” he told reporters as he bemoaned Rangers’ defensive tactics.

“We came up against a wall.”

    * Leaders Inter Milan can retain their title thanks to a superior head-to-head record if they beat Cagliari and second-placed AS Roma lose at home to struggling Torino.

Inter’s quest will be helped by Cagliari being without suspended trio Michele Fini, Pasquale Foggia and Francesco Pisano.

    * Third-placed Juventus need a point at home to mid-table Lazio to be assured a place in the Champions League qualifiers next term. Juve will hope to achieve their objective quickly as 10 players risk suspension.

    * Fifth-placed AC Milan have no new injury worries for the trip to relegation-threatened Livorno but Paolo Maldini, yet to decide if he will retire, is still out with a thigh injury.

Meanwhile Milan have moved ahead of Juve in the race to sign Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, Italian media reported.

    * Parma have been rocked by suspensions for the visit to relegation rivals Reggina. Fernando Couto, McDonald Mariga, Andrea Gasbarroni, Giulio Falcone and Paolo Castellini are all banned.

    * Genoa goalkeeper Rubinho has said his side’s outside hopes of UEFA Cup soccer next season will drive them on against struggling Empoli.

“We are happy with what we have achieved but we will give our utmost to get into Europe. We believe we’ll be able to do it,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

He is having such a great season. Maybe we should fullfill this lads dream Wink Razz

Maggio: My Dream Is To Play For Inter
Sampdoria star Christian Maggio has revealed that it is his dream to play for Inter. The 26-year-old has been a revelation at the Stadio Ferraris this season, and has scored a wonderful six goals from his full back position.

This has led to talk of a possible call-up for Italy for Euro 2008, but Maggio thinks this is unlikely.

"If am honest: I think not,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.

“I hope, obviously, but the truth is I'm doing well at the wrong time. I'm working towards the post-European period.”

Partly thanks to Maggio’s performances, Sampdoria are still in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League, and tomorrow they have a crunch game at Fiorentina.

“We will find the Viola tired from their UEFA Cup excursions, which may be an advantage,” he noted.

Finally Maggio was asked what his dream move in the future would be.

"My dream is to play for Inter. At my home we are all Inter, and Inter is in our destiny,” he concluded.

Maggio joined Sampdoria in 2006 on a co-ownership deal from tomorrow’s opponents Fiorentina. He has made 26 Serie A appearances this term.

According to reports in Italy, Juventus could be set to snub the legality of Calciopoli by sewing a third star on their shirts when they win their next Scudetto.

The Bianconeri have won 29 Scudetti on the field during their history, but they had two championships revoked following their alleged role in the Calciopoli scandal in 2006.

At present the Italian league only recognises Juve to have won 27 Scudetti, however managing director Jean-Claude Blanc earlier this week offered scant regard to this.

"The number of Scudetti won by Juve is 29,” Blanc told La7.

“And soon we will have a third star on our shirts."

It has since been revealed that there is nothing in the Calcio rulebook that prevents Juve from legally sewing a third star on their shirts when they next win the Scudetto.

Each star is used to represent 10 Scudetti, and one more championship would take the Bianconeri on to 30 without taking into account the two that have been stripped.

"A team may put however many stars on their jersey, there is no regulation defining the issue and the League does not impose this argument," explained Fabio Santoro, Deputy Secretary of the Lega Calcio.

"We say that it is an ethical issue. If Juventus wanted to put the third star when they win their next championship it would be their choice, and certainly would not be a violation of the rules.

“The only thing that should be remembered, however, is that with regard to the roll of honours officially recognised by the Lega Calcio the Bianconeri have won 27 and not 29.”

Juventus fans have always maintained that Calciopoli was just a conspiracy, and the club may use this opportunity to show how they do not recognise the legality of the penalties imposed following the scandal.

It would be exceeding stupid of them if they did it - they will break a century old tradition. Next what, Zamparini would make Palermo put on 5 stars just for the heck of it??

I am afraid this would only bring all the cheating highlight back on Juve. Gigli & Co need to realise that the best thing is to get over it, and move on... They were the guilty party, not the victim. You cannot apologise for the crime and ask for people to forget about it, and then go on and do this - Gigli will only make himself look like a fool if he does this.

    This weekend games:
    Fiorentina - Sampdoria
    Genoa - Empoli
Inter - Cagliari - Live on five
    Juventus - Lazio
    Livorno - Milan
    Napoli - Siena
    Palermo - Atalanta
    Reggina - Parma
    Roma - Torino
    Udinese - Catania

Thank God all games are at the same time... for 4 consecutive weeks we have had Roma play before Inter and pile up the pressure. Now I hope Inter score first and let Roma feel the heat! A Roma loss and a Inter win today would win us the scudetto with 3 games to go.

The most interesting game is obviously at florence, we can call it a CL qualifier. Sampdoria (and Milan) will be hoping that they can take advantage of a tried Viola team which looked very ordinary against Rangers coupla days ago. Donadel is back for Viola, but Pazzini is suspended. A win by Fiorentina would surely end doria's CL hopes, and most likely Milan's as well.

Milan & Sampdoria need wins to keep their CL hopes alive. Udinese, Genoa and Napoli need wins to keep their UEFA Cup hopes alive. There is a 7 team relegation battle, all teams above 30 points!! Its all happening today!!

I think Fiorentina will be ok. ie. get 4th and reach Manchester as well. The way Prandelli is protecting yet motivating his players looks very solid from the outside looking in.

He is brilliant, the most gifted Italian coach if you ask me. But since the game with Rangers, I can't help but think that maybe Gigliati was right after all.... perhaps Prandelli has bitten more than what his young squad can chew. The next two matches will be key on deciding this.... if Fiorentina can been the in-form Doria, and qualify for the CL, and beat Rangers to make the UEFA Cup final, then Prandelli will achieve God status at Florence... but if his tired squad now falls at the last step in both the objecttives, I can see most people coming around to Gigliati's point of view.

Only one surprise in the Inter starting line up... Burdisso and Chivu are prefered over Materazzi... bad idea, we look too lightweigth in defence, and both Acquafresca and Matri are tall!

    1' Inter: 12 Julio Cesar; 13 Maicon, 16 Burdisso, 26 Chivu, 6 Maxwell; 14 Vieira, 19 Cambiasso, 4 Zanetti, 5 Stankovic; 9 Cruz, 45 Balotelli.

    Balotelli scores!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $h!t, offside.

I had picked him out 2 years ago as a kid who has the complete package... tall, physically good, great runs, shots, header.... someone who could develop into a deadly striker.

Andn in the last 8 games he has starting to prove it, scoring 7 goals. So much so that he has got a call up from Poland for Euro2008 (his mum is polish?), which he has apparently turned down.
