Anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia
The FA, Premier League, Kick It Out and police arganisations are launching a new initiative against Islamaphobia and anti-Semitism in football. It will have zero-tolerance. Recent events and the Mido incident played a part in the initiative. It will involve confidential lines to report anonymously etc. The Board of Jewish Deputies is involved in it as well.

Re: Anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia
If they try to deal with it, there could be some trouble over definitions and semantics, particularly in relation to Spurs (obviously in terms of anti-Semitism). At Arsenal, the club has been sued in the last year by three supporters for not doing enough to kick out 'racist' language. They say that the club are responsible for banning anyone who uses racist language, and routinely decline to do so, even when stewards hear the terms being used.
Of course the term in question 'Yids' is used by Spurs fans to identify themselves, and so other supporters in turn say why shouldn't they be able to use the term as recognising Spurs rather than it having particularly religious connotations (irrespective of the fact that the term may have originated out of racist abuse in the past). It is somewhat absurd that the term could be racist if used by one set of fans, but not by another, and for this reason I think the attempt to sue our club by our own fans is farcical - even if it is a term that I don't use and find a bit distasteful.
If this initiative tries to tackle this issue then I think it will struggle to have any real impact. In truth I question how much of an impact this initiative will have anyway.

Re: Anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia
@ Sheffield Gunner: I think the recent incidents at Chelsea is the main reason. I got the impression that they were talking about gassing noises, holocaust references etc. and the failure to deal with it. Recently a Chelsea fan was turned on by fellow supporters for objecting to offensive holocaust related remarks aimed at Avram Grant. I believe that a Chelsea fan was recently arrested for anti-Semitic remarks at Tottenham and will be banned by Chelsea.
@ Ricardo: The Mido incident was at Newcastle earlier this season. Some Newcastle fans chanted 'He's got a bomb, he's got a bomb' at him.' He objected to it and when he scored he put his finger to his mouth to tell them to shut up. He got booked for it. The ref did not rescind the card and claimed he wasn't aware of racist provocation - certainly as seen by Mido. Even when made aware of it he still didn't rescind the card. Newcastle later apologised to him and Middlesboro and condemned the incident. It was said today that Mido's frustration was understandable and that they intend to have a zero-tolerance approach to such incidents to prevent repetition.

Well...our fans have been moaned at by the FA for:
-Anti-Semitic chanting towards Tottenham.
-Chants about Mido being a terroist.
Mido looks like Richard Reid and Tottenham fans shout "Yid Army" yet we can't say anything against them .
All bollocks IMO...it's a football match FFS.

Re: Anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia
I don't know, it's a tricky issue, but some thoughts:
Racist or religious insults are often seen as particularly serious and offensive, and I can understand that to an extent, in so far as racial and religious persecution has been constant and severe through history, race and religion are fundamental aspects of many people's self-identities or communal-identities, and so there's lots of emotion attached to the issues.
But a lot of distasteful stuff is shouted at football matches. For a start, I think tone and context are important, and that whilst it can get out of hand, football banter is mostly somewhat playful, or silly, or to wind people up, and it shouldn't be taken too seriously. Like Sheffield says, it's difficult to define what is and isn't racist, what does cross the line.
Then, ultimately, is it really valid to come down strongly on racism and set up initiatives against that, but to ignore various other discriminatory chants? For instance, reading up on the Mido case, apparently we Newcastle fans also called him a 'paedo' during the same game - he was targeted because, besides from being one of Boro's more well known, and probably less well-liked players, his name conveniently rhymed with the term, but apparently Newcastle fans have been calling Boro players 'paedos' for twenty years after it was claimed in 1987 that a large number of children in the Middlesbrough area had been sexually molested. In the same sort of vein, Boro fans apparently call Newcastle players rapists. In both cases, whole areas are being stereotyped, players are being randomly accused and insulted. I know that opposing fans have often chanted things regarding Bobby Robson's age and ill-health when playing us, mocking his age by suggesting he is perpetually about to piss himself, poking fun at his cancer. There seems an element of ageism here ('ageism' seems one of the most banal words there is to me, but regardless). I'm sure ginger-haired players get frequently abused. But such incidents are rarely made much of.
Then is it right or at all practical that, for instance, Mido could escape a booking or have a booking rescinded after making a gesture on the grounds that he was racially provoked, but a ginger-haired player, for instance, wouldn't get his booking rescinded? Or take David Beckham, for instance, who was always met with chants regarding his wife - such chants directed at me would at least make me more angry than chants regarding my race or my religion.
I think generally it's problematic to suggest that an insult that can be seen as stereotyping a group actually does stereotype that group; that a comment that can be seen as racist necessarily implies racism; that it's valid for any group or person other than the individual being directly insulted to feel or argue that they have been insulted. Racism can't necessarily be reduced to words and insults. If Mido is taunted with 'he's got a bomb', can the insult really be extended to Muslims as a whole - is it really intended to insult Muslims, or is it not just silly, and perhaps over the top banter; and is it really valid for Muslims to take offence at chants directed for whatever reason at an individual? Of course, I'm just taking Muslims as an example here.
I would support in principal any genuine attempts to eradicate racism from football, and I think football crowds can more generally be too aggressive too often, too often cross the line between good natured banter and offensiveness and aggression. But I think sometimes banter can be taken too seriously; I don't know how well issues of race and religion can be seperated from other issues; and there seems a big practical problem as far as doing anything about this goes, both in terms of defining what is and isn't acceptable, and in terms of enforcing any rules on crowds or on clubs or on players.

Re: Anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia
@ Bash: Good post. You have raised some important issues. Personally I think that if a player takes offence then at the very least he should not be booked. As you will see in one of the photos that I linked all he dif was put his finger over his mouth to tell them to shut up. He couldeven have been saying well the goal I just scored has shut up hasn't it?' He got booked for inciting the crowd. Ridiculous decision. He was offended and reacted to it. Not sure if this has happened but he could easily have lost family or friends to terrorism when Islamic fundamentalism turned violent in Egypt in recent years. Imagine how be called a bomber would affect him then.
Like you say I doubt anyone doing it thought it was more than banter, but some people think monkey-chanting is just banter to put black players off. Shouldn't the definition of what is offensive be made by those on the receiving end. By the way the chants regarding Robson are disgusting and anyone chantingthat should be chucked out of the ground. It's not banter if it is offensive.
I think the religious issues are meant to expand on racism initiatives already in place. I think we have to be careful of the banter defence. It is still being used to justify monkey-chanting. I have heard that defence personally in Spain, Italy and surprisingly the Netherlands, among others and historically it has been used in England, Scotland and elsewhere.
I thinkthe problem with this is that the players who will react to anti-Semitic or Islamaphobic chanting are the ones for whom their religion is important. In other words the genuine ones will find it offensive and react to it. Booking them for that adds injury to insult.

Re: Anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia
In Bulgaria, the big insult that opposing fans can throw at each other is that they are 'Gypsies',but black players are regularly racially abused with monkey noises, and when walking off alone to the changing room after a substitution, taking a throw in or warming up on the touchline,a home crowd will target a black player for racial abuse, being called 'cherni' or monkey. The crowds are that small,a player could easily see who is doing the shouting, as sometimes it's just odd individuals rather than a group of supporters, but I never saw any of the players react in any way.

Perhaps because Mido is more famous than them. The first link looks nothing like Reid and still not convinced regarding second one. Ghaly and Beye probably don't get targeted like Mido because he is outspoken, better known and has a reputation as a headcase that might react to baiting, whereas they don't. Eto'o has been racially abused at Zaragoza, whereas Thuram and Marcos Senna weren't. Last time I checked they were both black.

Btw what was wrong comparing mido with the shoe bomber? If, for instance, Kuyt or Rooney looked like him and everyone were making jokes about that.... It was PURE fun....., wasn't it?
About Feyenoord and their Zlatan "jokes" are pathetic and sickmaking! yuck....

Re: Anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia
Mido certainly took offence to it and like I said earlier he may well have personl history that we don't know about. Egypt has had a long history of problems with Islamic fundamentalism dating back to the times Gamel Abdel Nasser. The first leader of an Islamic fundamentalist party was executed by Nasser. Anwar Sadat Nasser's successor was murdered by them. There have been numerous atrocities under the Mubarak elective dictatorship. Is that unlikely that Mido's family could have been caught up in this violence somewhere and that he therefore reacts badly to such suggestions?
And as you say Hadji has far greater resemblance to Reid than Mido.
