    Bernard's Back In Toon! 0,,10278~2983582,00

FRENCH full-back Olivier Bernard has rejoined the Magpies for a second spell at St. James' Park.

Bernard left Gallowgate in January 2005 to link up with Southampton on loan until the end of the 2005/06 season, and then moved onto Glasgow Rangers where he spent the whole of last season.

The 26-year-old was released by the Ibrox club in the summer, and the fact he is a free agent allows him to make the move back to St. James' Park outside of the transfer window.

Olivier, who originally signed for the club from Lyon in October 2000, made a total of 116 appearances - with a further 26 from the bench - scoring six times.

His last appearance for the Magpies came on January 23 2005 when United lost 1-0 at Arsenal.

Bernard put pen to paper at St. James' Park on Friday morning, and was due to meet his 'new' team-mates at the training ground this afternoon.

The Frenchman becomes Glenn Roeder's fifth summer signing, joining Damien Duff, Obafemi Martins, Giuseppe Rossi and Antoine Sibierksi.

    Bugger all. Sad

But both fullbacks have been our main weakness, they put far too much pressure on the centerbacks. IF Bernard can regain the form he had last time he was here then it will be a good singing. No more Baba. Smile ok

Yeah there was a bit of contract bother, he wanted higher wages because he was on peanuts and Shepherd and Souness told him to bugger off and let hmi go to Southampton.

He was never defensively sound anyways. Your club can't be in such dire straits that Oliver Bernard is a step in the right direction Wink

This is true, BUT the guy isn't afraid to put in a tackle like BABAYARO is(worst left back in the league).

That's unfair on Babayaro. You've seen Warnock first hand.

Kimbo, what I really wonder is for all the cash flashing your chairman does, I for one simply cannot understand why you haven't brought in at least three new defenders (CB/FB), someone, anyone. At this moment you don't need a star, you need damage control. Someone to plug the hole. Can you even imagine having an injury there?

I was grinding my teeth when I saw Glen putting N'Zogbia in FB.

Good buy - Olivier Bernard had a spell where he was awesome with Newcastle.

I dream of having an injury there just so i get to see Steven Taylor start.

Defenders have never really interested Freddy, when we finished in the top 4 for a couple of seasons under Bobby Robson our defenders were Aaron Hughes, Bramble, Andy O'Brian, Dabizas, and ofcourse Bernard.

I reckon a defence of Ramage(i'm sick of Carr), Taylor, Moore, and Bernard is pretty good for Newcastle. Obviously next year(or january) i'd like to see another full back and center back brought in but it doesn't look like we have the money right now. Attack was our priority this summer. ok

Hopefully, Bernard can re-capture his previous form; he’ll be a good acquisition for Newcastle if he does, obviously.

I didn’t expect him to perform so poorly at Ibrox, though. He looked so disinterested and wasteful on the ball. His athleticism and ability to attack from the full-back position should have endeared him to Rangers fans - in the same way Numan did.

Kimbo, are you satisfied with Craig Moore?

    Thanks

Yeah Craig Moore is a pretty solid if unspectacular defender, and most importantly he's consistent... something we've been lacking for umpteen years. ok

Few would have guessed that the young Aussie that Walter Smith introduced to Rangers as a midfielder would become their best central defender since Richard Gough and John Brown were around.

Moore was an appalling central midfielder, as you can probably imagine; but as a central defender, he thrived for Rangers.

Advocaat sold him to Crystal Palace when he arrived, only to realise his mistake and sign him back again at the earliest opportunity. Rangers still haven’t replaced Moore.
