lovely counter, I didn't trust Daftville to finish but credit to him. This game might just come to life now.

Not much creativity from Sporting and apart from fancy haircut Veloso no one really stands out.

That's a great result for Rangers. They countered Sporting perfectly. Rangers' squad is, technically, limited. But Walter Smith's tactics, i.e. 451, and his ability to instil a winning mentality in his charges means that they punch way above their weight.

I thought the second leg, poised as it was at 0-0, suited Walter Smith's tactics, enabling the victory to come to fruition.

I think Fiorentina will defeat them, however.

Still, LRD and my friend will be deliriously happy that they've progressed to their first European semi-final in 26 years.

    Congratulations

It will be difficult against Fiorentina but Rangers have proven me wrong in just about every round of this UEFA cup run so far and long may it continue.

As the commentator mentioned on ITV4 tonight, 'this isn't anti football, this is intelligent football'. Sure it aint always pretty but we can only play to our strengths againt technically superior sides.

No problem. Welcome to the board.

I agree with the commentator on ITV4 (Robbie Earle, Andy Townsend or the other guy) who said it is intelligent football. It is.

Because if Rangers tried to play nice, passing football like Barca, for instance, they probably wouldn't be very successful.

Any manager with a whit of intelligence himself would instruct Rangers to defend vigorously and counterattack teams when the opportunity presents itself. It is disingenuous of other posters to suggest otherwise and then complain when Rangers do defend and counterattack. Only a naive fool would instruct this current Rangers team to play pretty football.

I think they should play whichever way they please, and if it successful then that’s even better.

I should have said Fiorentina will probably defeat Rangers. But the possibility remains, of course, that Rangers could progress to the final of the UEFA cup.

This could be Rangers' most successful ever season. My friend hopes it is.

    Cheers

I watched Gabby Logan interview Walter Smith and Ally McCoist on Inside Sport on Monday night.

Walter Smith stated that, owing to financial restrictions, Rangers are limited to playing defensive, counterattacking football.

To be fair to him, he said that when he was in charge before they used to win because they had guys like Laudrup and Gazza - and a whole lot more he didn't mention - who win games and play attractive football.

He conceded that Rangers cannot afford those types of players now, so they have to try and win with a different sort of player: players who give them a tactical advantage but who aren't necessarily technically competent footballers.

    And I agree with him.

I don't remember too many people complaining when Rosenborg were successful using the same negative tactics. Indeed, people applauded their resourcefulness. Well, I applaud Walter Smith for getting to the semi-final of a good European competition with one of the most limited Rangers' teams in a long time.

At least you're seeing it for what it is.

Rangers cannot go out and play free flowing attacking football against teams like Barca, Lyon, Werder Bremen or Sporting because they simply are not good enough to do so.

But apart from Barca, where are the teams I mentioned now in European competition?

I don't care if Rangers aren't shaking European football to it's foundations with their style of play because if it gets us to Manchester I'll be more than satisfied.

In actual fact, I'm more than satisfied now if the truth be told. I never thought I'd see Rangers in the semi final of a European competition in my lifetime so I'm going to soak this up as much as possible.

Of course above all a fan wants to win, i do to and to be fair you guys were effective.

Still, from a neutral point of view it is an ugly way to play. Of course you do not have the exclusive of playing like this and even attacking teams play like it from time to time.

It would be more atractive to european football that teams that go far would play attacking football, but nowadays they rarely do.

Anyway, Congratz to you guys. <Ale>

I can see everybody elses point. Of course I would love us to be playing attacking football and progressing but at the moment we don't have the players to do it so we are having to play the type of game that we're good at and a lot of that is defensive. If Rangers tried to play open football against the likes of Sporting then we'd get horsed most likely because they were technically superior.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion of course but I think Rangers are unfairly criticised at times. Last night we played well and deserved to qualify.

WTF does 'anti-football' mean anyway? As I said it may not be the most pleasing on the eye but it's still football. It's effective and I'm pretty sure there are a lot of European clubs fans who would like to be in our position right now.

For me personally, I don't have a problem with Rangers or Celtic playing negative football. My problem is how you play that $h!t, and then the next morning all the fans and press are calling it "Brilliant", and publishing long articles with a load of rubbish in them, like this one:

It doesn't say much for the standard of the Uefa cup that a mediocre negative team like Rangers can get to the semi finals.

    Hopefully Fiorentina will stuff them.

But perhaps they mean 'brilliant' in a different context to the one I think you are suggesting?

Do you think they mean a brilliant footballing performance?

I think it was a brilliant performance. Scottish teams have fared so poorly away from home in Europe for a long time that for Rangers to travel to Lyon and Sporting and pick up victories is, I think, brilliant.

And I also think they are entitled to revel in their success. After all, unlike Barcelona, for instance, Rangers - and other Scottish teams - have been starved of European success.

What harm does it do if they want to celebrate getting to the semi-final of the UEFA cup? Anyway, this might be their last opportunity to celebrate in Europe this season since I feel Fiorentina will put them out.

    Cheers

    Edit -

Also, the comments in the article you linked to are quite humble.

The second leg of their tie in Bremen saw the German side dominate. Yet Rangers prevailed, thanks to McGregor, Smith's organisation and a fair slice of good luck.
