Carlos Alberto Parreira has resigned as coach of 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa.

Parreira has decided to quit after 15 months of a three-year contract because his wife is ill after recent major surgery.

His wife Leila is believed to be battling cancer and the Brazilian is to return to his homeland in order to look after her and be with his grandchildren.

The 65-year-old coach guided Brazil to their fourth World Cup success in the United States in 1994.

South Africa won nine matches, drew six and lost six during Parreira's brief reign.

In his last match in charge, Bafana Bafana beat Paraguay 3-0 in a friendly in Pretoria to earn their first success against South American opposition

So another brazillian will take his place for south africa. Sad
when will we learn that it is better to focus on our own coaches. allthough he might be more humble then Parreira who seemed like he didnt care much about south africa to me.

Really I thought his work in the 60s was better, but I guess I did ask for that though. Smile

I am not sure about his Internatinal work, but at home he won sevral State Tournaments. Dont know why Parreira indicated him, they are others coaches who I think are much better. At least for a country that will host the next WC and wants to show a good job

Exactly what I was bothered about. No reason to go with Santana rather than a local coach. Aim high or not at all. Hope they don't get embarassed. I hear Ronald Koeman is looking for work and has an uncanny knack of thinking that delivering utter Cr@p is something to be delighted about. Well I had to get a dig in about Koeman somewhere didn't I? Wink

Santana usually is hired when a club from Rio de Janeiro is in trouble. He won five worthless state championships. That's his track record. His internantional experience is far away from being impressive as well. He spent some time in Arabia and Japan. This season he is coaching in Libertadores for the second time in his career.

As if it wasn't bad enough, Joel Santana clearly says that he is going for the money.

Sounds like South African FA are looking for an excuse to f@ck it up. Can just about understand appointing Parreira, although I disagree with it - he has coached in Africa previously and presided over one of theworst upsets in the history of the African Cup of Nations. He at least won the World Cup and knows something about Africa, but Santana looks like a mercenary lacking he tools to deliver. This could become horribly embarassing for South Africa.
