Re: South Africa sacs Santana
I heard that their old manager Carlos Alberto Parreira, who only quit because of health problems (and subsequently recommended Santana) is returning

Anyway...South Africa are in big trouble. They will not go anywhere with Parreira as the coach.
I feel sorry for Joel. The guy is a legend. I mean... He is not that good, but he is funny.
At least he did a good job in the Confed Cup.

read that too.
wonder if any coach can give them some stability and confidence now. They played not bad at the confed, but realistically they shouldnt survive last 16. With a tough group not even that.

TRouble with South Africa is that they had a plan - a good one ten years ago, but they just can't stick to it. The idea behind Pareira as ciach was to get younger local coaches to learn from him and eventually take over. Trouble was some of them wouldn't wait. They even recommended bad players to try to get Pareira and then Santana sacked.
There is far to more to this than just bad results and Pareira returning. Pareira was just bringing it round when he quit. He recommended SAntana, but warned him about the politics. Santana took too long to listen and te SAFA didn't act. Believe it or not the same sort of thing happened to Queiroz. He was actually pretty good as SA coach, but was undermined, sacked and Sout Africa did terribly again.
Unfortunately they repeated the same mistake. They need a no-nonsense coach that will clear out the trouble-m,akers and they must do it fast or risk humiliation at the World Cup.

If Russia make it they still need a fourth to be able to play cards....so SA *needs* to hire a Dutchie
Gullit / Krol would seem like an ideal combo (just as long as Gullit doesn't have anything to do with selections or tactics)

at least with Gullit they'll play sexy football, which I have always considered to be a better idea than total football

Gullit / Krol would seem like an ideal combo (just as long as Gullit doesn't have anything to do with selections or tactics, or coaching, or practice sessions, or press conferences - anything really. He can be there and look the part though)

Not directly, but I'll ask my contacts in SA about it. It is not an outrageous suggestion. Krol has experience of coaching in Africa, including in SA, so he would have the advantage of knowing some of the malevolent personalities. He could work well, but he would have to clear out the malcontents - one of whom is in temporary charge. If he is appointed, he'd best watch his back and not expect the SAFA to do it for him.

Krol would not be the worst choice, but on what basis would he go? Orlando Pirates would have to be compensated or he would have to be shared, which is not in their interests. He'd be mad to resign as after the World Cup where will South Africa go in world football? Not a good job to take now.
My guess is that Parreira will be hired but with more power than last time if he wants it of course.

True, but neither Erwin nor Martin are available. You do know that Krol was successful in his first spell at el Zamalek don't you and that he did well in his first season with Orlando Pirates? He knows the teritory and local players, which is an advantage. It would help him to weed out the malicious recommendations - something that Santana didn't have, nor Parreira. He might not be a great coach, but he could fit the requirements of SA quite well despite that. Ronald Koeman certainly doesn't.

Parreira is the "new" coach.
