    JUVENTUS F.C. - 2008-2009 Empty JUVENTUS F.C. - 2008-2009

Post by Tarun Fri Jun 20, 2008 10:58 am

As Juventus prepares for the next season & especially it's return to Champions League, this thread is dedicated to tracking the club's performance across the home season, the CL campaign & of course the transfer market activities.

To begin with, here is the text of an interview on what Jean Claude Blanc, the Managing Director, had to say:

Jean-Claude Blanc speaks across the board

Exactly two weeks before the new season kicks off, the new 2008/09 Juventus continues to take shape. In a period where even the European championships risk being obscured by all the summer transfer rumours, it was up to Jean-Claude Blanc to recap the situation. The Managing Director gave a long interview with Sky Sport, showed during the “Euro Calciomercato” show.

He spoke about a variety of subjects, from the transfer market to the European Championships, but mostly about Juventus. Blanc will be celebrating two years at the club on the 29th of June.

Ready for Pinzolo. «Our aim is to complete all transfers before the summer camp starts; by July 4th we hope to have a complete squad».

Transfer market in full swing. «After signing Amauri, renewing Nedved's contract, getting back three great young players such as Marchisio, Giovinco and De Ceglie and purchasing Mellberg already in January, our priority now is finding a quality midfielder. We're also looking for reserve goalkeepers, obviously the first team one's role is covered…».

Everything passes from the middle. «We're looking for a midfielder of great quality. There aren't many around, and some of them aren't free to move. So we need to speak to the clubs first and then the players. We're in talks with a few; in the end we'll make the best choice under a football point of view but also in terms of money. Aquilani, Stankovic or Xabi Alonso? We're negotiating with more than three».

Facts first. «As is our wont, we only talk when an agreement has been reached; to speak before that only makes the fans dream and increases player prices».

Trezeguet not going anywhere. «Some agents have been busy trying to create enthusiasm for the player in Spain and Italy. But as it stands now, Juventus are not in talks with Barcelona. We've already said that David cannot be sold, even more so if there aren't any talks going on. He's an important player, not just for us but for his National team. We saw how difficult it is to score without him».

Come on Italy. «Del Piero and Buffon deserve to be Italy's captains, alongside former Juve player Cannavaro. They deserve it after the last two terrible but beautiful years they lived at the Club. These European Championships are like a reward for all they've done, and the same goes for Chiellini and Camoranesi. They deserve to lift this trophy. When we watch them win these games, for us it's like Juve winning too».

Towards the second anniversary. «What's the thing that I liked the most in these two years? Juve's ability to make a lot of people happy with a win, with an attitude, a certain style, a statement by captain Del Piero or Gigi Buffon. I think this ability to make people happy so quickly, only in football and at a club like Juventus can this sort of thing happen».

Towards the Juventus of the future. «We've built a modern and professional club, working extensively on our youth sector. What will it be like in a year's time? Juve will have already started a new winning cycle, two years before moving to the new stadium, a very strong signal that Juve are contenders and they'll be in the future too, as we've put down some solid foundations for the future. Juventus' house has very solid walls and we'll keep building on top of that. We're well organized and we're working very well».

Are you happy with your defensivev midfield pairing of just Sissoko-C Zanetti, now that the cover of Nocerino is not there?

Personally I thought Juve made a grave error in letting Nocerino go, I see him as a future successor for Gattuso/Ambrosini for the Azzurri.

Now that Blanc has categorically stated it, I am sure that Juventus will keep him. But it will be interesting to see if Juventus sell Iaquinta or Palladino or else we have a good line-up of quality strikers competing for a starting place

In fact it was a shock to see Juventus letting go of Nocerino. And I am sure that Nocerino himself would not have been happy about it.
But we continue to search for a world-class midfielder & hopefully we will sign one soon. I would be very happy if it is Alonso

The issue in rating how good Iaquinta has been for Juventus is that he never got the playing time that he deserved because of the splendid form of Del Piero & Trezeguet. And whenever he came on as a sub, IMO he played well & scored a few important goals as well. Personally, I would want Juventus to keep him.

Next season's strike force should be:
    Trezeguet+Del Piero+Amauri+Iaquinta

Turan To Play In Italy - Agent

According to his agent, Turkish talent Arda Turan will play with either Milan or Juventus next season.

21-year-old forward Arda Turan of Turkey has been one of the big surprises of Euro 2008, and this summer he looks set to make a move to a big club, most probably in Italy.

According to his agent Ahmet Bulut, Turan "will play in Italy with a big club, Milan and Juventus are both interested. Next week, the European Championship is over and we will make everything official.

"Many clubs have contacted us, but his price-tag is pretty high and he only wants to join the best club. Whatever happens, he will play in Italy and for a big club. Juve and Milan are interested, and from Monday we'll be discussing terms. Again, I can say that Turan will be playing in Italy next season."

It seems the Bianconeri are in pole position, as they are willing to offer midfielder Sergio Almiron, along with around 6 million euros. However, first they need to free up a non-EU spot in their squad before they can start to negotiate.

Does kill two birds with one stone though. If I'm honest I've not been overly impressed with Juve's transfers so far. But if you get Alonso + Turan + someone else would definitely be steps in the right direction

Juve seem to be going for quantity and not quality. It might work. I do agree with you though those two would be good signings. Alonso especially, Turan is a bit of a risk but he did look good in euros. never really heard of him before then.

If they keep up the same level of commitment then perhaps they wont need much more quality. I do think though that they would wise to strengthen more since they have to play Cl anyway.
they should get a real quality AM to dictate play sicne Giovinco is still young. also a new anchor man will be needed.

Veloso is halfway to Juve Tuesday 1 July, 2008

Highly rated Portuguese midfielder Miguel Veloso is “50 per cent Juventus”, according to his agent.

Veloso has turned heads in Europe while playing for Sporting Lisbon and was on Milan’s radar before Juve overtook them in the race for his services.

At the age of 22, the talented holding player could be the man to toughen up the Old Lady’s lightweight midfield and as Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso continues to procrastinate, the Turin giants could turn their focus to Veloso.

“Juventus are interested in him, but he still has four years on his contract with Sporting Lisbon,” agent Paulo Barbosa explained.

“There are also potential suitors in Spain and England, but I’d say there’s a 50 per cent chance that he’ll join Juve.”

Reports in Portugal suggest that Sporting value Veloso at around £15m but that Juventus are planning to offer £12m plus midfield misfit Tiago Mendes.

One of those few moments when I am grateful to Juve fans..... Stankovic playing for the biaconeri would been very hard to watch... it would have been a very stupid piece of business for Inter (and God knows we have done quite a few of those, specially when dealing with Juve/Milan)... Stankovic would have been perfect for Juve, giving their midfield exactly what it lacks at the moment - more bite. He could have become a replacement for the aging Nedved. Like we did with Cannavaro, Inter were about to gift Juve the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle that they are missing.

    Thank you, Juve fans.

I am glad to see the Juventus management, for once, being influenced by emotions of their fans rather than their usual business-like approach towards such affairs. I am very sure they will eventually land someone of better quality than Stank.

A very good article on Channel 4 -

    Blog: Young blood

Much is made of Juventus’ quality youngsters, but Antonio Labbate argues that they’re presently nothing more than chess pieces

President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has a dream. In all honesty, he has many dreams. From Juventus pipping Inter in a Scudetto dash to the Bianconeri winning the Champions League in Rome after their recent exodus from the competition. But a recurring one, as he’s reminded us on numerous occasions since his appointment two years ago, is to build a competitive side which includes talented young Italians.

It’s an honourable and popular objective, a philosophy which brings back memories of the late 1970s and early ‘80s when a predominantly Italian Juve side – enforced due to foreigner restrictions – took on the world and, in most cases, succeeded. It was no coincidence that six of the Azzurri who started the 1982 World Cup Final against West Germany spoke Juventino.

Yet, as John Hancock Field once remarked: “All worthwhile men have good thoughts, good ideas and good intentions, but precious few of them ever translate those into action.” The reality is that Juventus, even this side which is still in its infancy after Calciopoli, doesn’t have the time to wait for promising youngsters to turn into the champions which are needed to compete at the highest level.

Looking for proof of that last statement? Ask Domenico Criscito who was prematurely thrown into the starting XI last term, crumbled under the spotlight and sent back to Genoa in January. Then we have Antonio Nocerino, a player of real promise, who will be performing for Palermo next season after he was sold in the deal which took Amauri north. Surely he deserved another Turin campaign to prove himself? And don’t forget Raffaele Palladino, who is on the verge of joining Genoa. They were said to be the Juventus of the future…

At the present time, the outfit’s much-touted youth policy functions within the same kind of parameters as it did under the Triade. For the most part, boys are nurtured and then subsequently forfeited in the transfer market. The majority are nothing more than a pawn on a chessboard looking to gain its eighth rank in order to be promoted, but usually sacrificed for a more important piece.

With that in mind, Juventus fans should be slightly apprehensive of what the new season will bring for Sebastian Giovinco, Claudio Marchisio and Paolo De Ceglie. All three will meet up with their teammates on Friday after being recalled to Turin, but the trio will be aware that they may have to put in a Giorgio Chiellini-type season to make sure they’re still part of the same squad 12 months down the line – otherwise, it could be checkmate to their Juve dreams.

While this is largely true, there are some differences between how the Triade dealt with youngsters and Secco now. I can bet on it that so many talents would not have been sold under the Triade, who cleverly kept their options on the talents.

I am a bit surprised that Juve let so many of them go, specially Palladino, Nocerino and Lanzafame.

Palladino is not done yet so I hope some sense prevails. Even a co-ownership deal would be fine. But Nocerino was a big shock. I guess Lanzfame is on a co-ownership deal as well so it is fine.I don't blame Secco coz he is just handling the scouting & transfer negotiations side of things, but Gigli & Ranieri who are letting this all happen under their noses
