Volkan and Schweinsteiger Bans Empty Volkan and Schweinsteiger Bans

Post by Kimbo Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:08 pm

What was the difference between these two incidents?

I'm still puzzled by it, and it has had a massive effect on the tournament when you think about it. If Schweinsteiger got a 2 game ban like Volkan Germany probably wouldn't have beaten Portugal, unless Ferreira or Ricardo scored an own goal each. And if Volkan got a 1 game ban like Bastian then Rustu would never have been there to make a hash of Klose's goal last night.

I would love to hear UEFA try and explain this. scratch

Typical inconsistency from UEFA. I don't like to see players getting banned, but Schweinsteiger got a real let off. His red card was at the end of the match so had a minimal effect there, and he was one yellow card away from a suspension anyway. So he essentially ended up with the same punishment for a straight red card (and for violent conduct I guess it would be termed as) as he would have got for a yellow card. A lucky break for Germany really, although I think it is more an issue of UEFA's inconsistencies rather than a display of favouritism.

Whats the normal ban for a red card in these situations? I've complained about refereeing standards on the board before after the Mascherano incident. They just make it up as they go along.

Interesting argument. Any mitigating circumstances in either case - provocation for example? Could explain different bans.

Well to be fair Arshavin and Volkan got two match for violent play. Scweinsteiger's red card was also for violent play but looking at it it wasn't a red card in the first place. Still it is inconsistent.

Schweinsteiger got a 1 match ban because Leko who provoked him got was booked for it also. That is the official explanation.

It's a bullshit explanation. It was IDENTICAL to Volkans sending off.

Maybe, but Koller was not booked for provoking Volkan. Blame the ref.

The official reason was that Volkan did not go to the stands when he was sent off but sat in the dugout.

So Volkan wasn't provoke at all? Does he have a history of losing the plot?

How did Friedrich not get sent off, or banned based on tv-images, for his possibly carreer-ending foul on Cry Ronaldo ?

    Same reason...
