During the Zidane era. The team was built round him and everything went through him. I don't think there is a player of that calibre around at the moment that can do that for France despite how highly you rate Bodmer.

Do France have any good prospects in the centre of defence? I haven't been impressed with Gallas so far this year and is getting increasingly unreliable, and it looked like Mexes was given a torrid time yesterday. Boumsong surely can't be the best alternative to them.

Surprisingly, I can't really think of any! Strange because they have so much strength in depth in other positions.

I think Abidal could play fine as a CB for France. Never been convinced by Mexes, he's always been error-prone and I reckon he's another one of those defenders who looks really good in his club's setup/tactics, but just can't adapt anywhere else.

    A & K - agree about Cisse, he deserves a go.

Boumsong needs a bit of trust and he'll be ok.

    @ Ray Parlour:

Whilst no one can replace Zidane - you can't replace Zidane with no one.

This is what Domenech did at the Euro's Doh

Bodmer is very creative and mentally strong enough to coipe with pressure + he is built differently to most no 10's and cannot be eaten by a strong DM in the way Riquelme can.

Their defence is the biggest problem, strange coz that has always been the main strength of all the French sides I have seen. I swear their opponents have had a 100% record against them infront of goal since that match V Holland(defence was excellent before that) at the Euros. That is simply unacceptable. Austria barely attacked last night, but managed to score 3; 2 from simple long balls into the box and the other from a needless corner that resulted into a penalty. Given away soft goals only makes it hard for the forwards. But even at 2-0 down France could have won or at least drawn that match had they not conceded a 3rd just after pulling one back.

I must admit he slipped my mind. He can't be much worse than Boumsong as a reserve, although it's a bit of a worry for France that they don't have better back-up, or a greater number of players fighting for the squad places for the centre of defence. Has he been fully capped yet, or did he just play an 'A' game for France?

    1 A-Länderspiel, 2 U18-, 11 U20- und 15 U21-Länderspiele für Frankreich

    (from VfB.de)
I think over here, A-Länderspiel still means a full cap.

Ok, I guess it's a bit different here because although Clichy has played a couple of times for France 'A' or the B team or however you choose to look at it, he (and people) in England still look at him as being uncapped at international level.

I must say, Delpierre is older than I first thought, so if he wants to make the step up to full international level he really needs to do so now whilst the competition for places isn't too strong and now that he should be reaching his peak.

Gilles Marini, the French actor from Sex and the City, is playing in Soccer Aid 2008 - a charity match between ex-English and Rest of the World pros and celebrities at Wembley. He scored a real beauty of a goal, chipping it over David Seaman in goal for England. Someone should send a DVD of that to Domenech. Laugh
