Everyone plays their youth and reserve players, and end up with mostly mediocre games that few care about amidst a a congested fixture list.

They should get rid of international friendlies, unless it is showpiece occasions eg Italy-Brasil, and they should get rid of the carling cup.

Or they should have reserve international matches. There are reserve teams playing in their own leagues, so why not have the england reserves versus germany reserves in some small stadium somewhere.

Depends which one? I saw Ghana v Nigeria and England v Spain in February 2007. One was terrible, with little more than a great goal by Andres Iniesta to recommend it and the other was sensational. Ghana won 4-1 - their first victory over Nigeria in 15 or so years. There were friendly pitch invasions and too large a crowd for the seating. It was a fantastic match. Try telling Ghanaians that friendly didn't matter - and it was far better than a few club matches that I've been to.

It's called respect for your national team. Say 40 years ago, players would play for England if they had a broken arm, these days they couldn't really give a toss.

Even leaving out the wages, I'm sure the players earn a lot more promoting their club rather than their country.
