Anyone but Lyon or Roma would be ok i guess for United. I am tired of Roma and Lyon as we've played them 4 times each in the last 3 years.

PREDICTIONS FOR LAST 16 DRAW....... Empty Re: PREDICTIONS FOR LAST 16 DRAW.......

Post by fcb Thu Dec 11, 2008 6:25 am

Well it's pointless trying to predict what will actually come out of the draw (since I don't know which balls will be warmed up), but here's what I'd like to see:

    Barça-Lyon
Probably the most beatable of the 4 we can face (Inter, Chelsea, Arsenal being the other 3). I don't buy all this bollocks about "I want a hard team, you have to beat the hard teams anyway to win the CL" blah blah. Sorry, that's idealistic garbage.
Give me the easiest possible draw at each round any day, so that the team can balance league and CL commitments. At the end of the day no one remembers whether you beat Anorthosis or Liverpool in the QFs, just that you were the one lifting the trophy in Rome.
Just look at last season, Barça got to the semifinals because we got the easiest available team in the Round of 16 and QFs - first Rangers, then Schalke. That means more money, more coefficient points (helping with seeding later on), and more prestige. Otherwise our team last year was nowhere good enough to go that far.

    Bayern-Real Madrid:
Because Bayern always knock them out cheers

    Man. Utd.-Atletico
This would be a great match IMO. Atletico's defending isn't great, but the prospect of Aguero testing himself against Ferdinand and Vidic is mouth-watering.

    Liverpool-Villarreal:
I think it would be an interesting clash of styles. Villarreal don't have as much quality at the back, but they play very well as a team, and I think they can make a good match of it in central midfield, Liverpool's strongest area.

    Panathanaikos-Sporting:
So that at least one underdog is in the QFs.

    Porto-Inter:
Would be a test for Mourinho against his former club...probably not the most open or exciting of matches though. Also chosen because I got to this point and the only other group winners left are Juve and Roma, neither of whom can face Inter Razz

    Juve-Chelsea:
I don't think we've seen this matchup before, at least not recently. Again, would be an interesting matchup in terms of styles of play.

    Roma-Arsenal:
Both play attacking football, and although Arsenal have a bit more quality and different ways to win, the 2nd leg being in Rome will equalise things a bit.

    What I want to see:
Inter-ManU - its been a long long time, its the final I want to see... but the way we are playing, we'll not make the final, so better have it now...
Real-Roma - always an intriguing game
    Lyon-Barca - for the goals

What I think will happen, using the UEFA coincidences theory:
Inter-Liverpool - last seasons revenge, plus the Mou-Rafa story
Real-ManU - always the case, an UEFA special
Chelsea-Juve - special one for Ranieri

I have a feeling that Inter will draw Liverpool again.

Inter have a few scores to settle from last year's 1/8 final. This time hopefully there will not be any helping hand from referees. In CL Mourinho has some personal scores to settle against Rafa.

I think it will be two great games.

    My other predictions

    Bayern Munich - Chelsea
Panathinaikos - Sporting (UEFA always schemes to have two non-favourite teams face off at this stage)
    Juventus - Villarreal
    Manchester United - Atletico Madrid
    Porto - Real Madrid
    Barcelona - Lyon
    Roma - Arsenal

Exactly my point about this cup. Barca almost got straightway to the final without even doing anything. there is nothing memorable about that. you might see it differently but that is because you just want the Cl trophy. it should be done with style but that is just how i see it i gues.

So you're admitting that your 5 CLs back in the 50s were worth nothing, because at the time it was a bit of a mickey mouse trophy with hardly any teams in (and not everyone took it 100% seriously) ?

Everyone claims Madrid is the biggest in the world because they have 9 CL titles. Nobody cares how they won them, illegally transferred players (Di Stefano) and all. That's my point.

Edit: to clarify, my point is that nobody remembers the details, just the facts. I'm not saying that Madrid is the biggest club in the world. Just making sure Wink

We didn't face them at all in the 90s I don't think but they beat the Quinta del Buitre a couple times in the 80s, 86-87 & 87-88 I think. But we do have a very bad record in Germany so if we can avoid Bayern it's good by me.

Why were the worth nothing?Only somebody who knew the situation of football back then can tell what teams were great. just because it was a time where teams from more countries played doesn't make it worse. also remember talent was more spread around. from what i understood it was taken seriously. i mean one final was witnessed by around 120.000 spectators.
either way like i said we shouldn't talk about that but about today because today you have the option of meeting the best and beating them. if you don't what is the point of calling your team the best. anyway understandably Barca fans will do anything to win it because that is something that will always be annoying with Real having more.

This is such a poor argument even from a cule. I was planning a long rebuttal but all I will say is these are among the teams that participated in the first 5 European Cups:

    AC Milan
    PSV

    Borussia Dortmund
    Red Star Belgrade
    Ajax
    Steaua Bucharest

So you're admitting that your 5 CLs back in the 50s were worth nothing, because at the time it was a bit of a mickey mouse trophy with hardly any teams in (and not everyone took it 100% seriously) ?

This is such a poor argument even from a cule. I was planning a long rebuttal but all I will say is these are among the teams that participated in the first 5 European Cups:

    AC Milan
    PSV
    Manchester United
    Borussia Dortmund
    Red Star Belgrade
    Ajax
    Steaua Bucharest
    Barcelona
    Juventus
    Benfica
    Fiorentina

    Mickey Mouse indeed. ok
Even then you are not including teams that might have been great at that time but just fell off. like i said none of us are old enough to remember the good teams back then and the talent was more spread about back then aswell.

You're exactly right - teams like Reims, Honved, even Athletic Bilbao had some great teams back then even though nowadays they aren't considered "big" teams.

Anyhow, it's just the cule inferiority complex rearing it's head once again...probably no coincidence that it's just ahead of the clasico. Biggrin

It has been far to long, and revenge on the cards with numerous ex players and the Ronaldo saga and all that was said during the summer would make it extra special. Wouldn't be super confident as if certain Madrid players turn up they could beat anyone, but we'd be favourites for sure.

Think we'll get Villareal, Inter in the quarters if we both make it, Chelsea in the semi and Barca in the final.
