I'd assume 1984 happened between 1983 and 1985, and I'm not sure there's anything any of us can do about that.
We accept it because our press fills us with scare stories about how if we didn't have CCTV we'd all be constantly getting raped or kidnapped or terroristed or whatever.

Ummm... I think that we accept it because (in this instance) we're talking about CCTV on private property. If you don't want to be on CCTV in a club or pub, don't go there.

CCTV is accepted because all political parties with pretensions to govern think the only way to win votes in the law and order debate is to be more draconian than the other. In this respect they are aided by media massaging of crime statistics to make it seem there is more of a problem than there is. Moral panics rarely have a basis in fact. In the 80s there was a panic over mugging. Among the things the media 'forgot' to say is that most victims of muggings were black working class not elderly white women that you would think from reading the press at that time. And furthermore only 7% of the crimes classed as muggings fitted the public stereotype that the panic fuelled. Sus and stop and search thrived in that atmosphere.

dock ahead of his trial in connection with a fight at a Merseyside
nightclub last year.The 29-year-old, appearing at Liverpool
Crown Court with six others, denies a charge of affray relating to the
incident at Southport's Lounge Inn. A 34-year-old businessman was injured at the bar on 29 December. Mr Gerrard, from Formby, Merseyside, had been celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United. The
other defendants include Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin,
28, of Guildford Road, Southport; and Accrington midfielder Robert
Grant, 18, of Enstone Avenue, Litherland. Four men from Huyton,
Merseyside, are also charged. They are: John McGrattan, 33, of Rimmer
Avenue; Paul McGrattan, 31, of Linden Drive; John Doran, 29, of
Woodlands Road; Ian Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
