The best team and best player in the world? BadgeThe best team and best player in the world? 95803

A lot of people are saying that Barcelona are the best team in the world and Messi is the best player in the world this season.

If you agree with this then does this mean Barcelona must atleast win the League and Champions League double otherwise this season will be a failure?

    La Liga
    1. Barcelona - 53 pts
    2. Real Madrid - 39 pts*

    14 points lead.

    * Real Madrid are currently drawing 0-0 with Deportivo.

    Champions League
Through to the last 16, play Lyon next.

I expect they will win the league.

CL is always a bit of a lottery. It's not always the case that the best team in the CL win it. You need a bit of luck generally, and a couple of poor games and you're out. That said, I have them down as favourites, but there are a few others who are definitely capable too.

What's certain is that Messi will need to keep up his good form for them to win the CL.

winning the league, yes, but the best team don't always win the Champions League. They should get to the semis though.

A 14 points lead means it's pretty obvious they're the best team in La Liga,

That means next to nothing this season. We're absolute garbage, yet we're second and 3 points clear from third if the score remains the same against Deportivo. Go figure.

The league is already in the bag, when it comes to the CL anything past the QF's is always a plus for me when it comes to barca.

Madridz and the rest of the league are garbage because we're letting them look like garbage.

I can still see a team like Man Utd stifling them and grinding out a result (if they get a fair bit of luck) in a similar manner to last season, so there are definitely no guarantees with regards to the Champions League. They haven't come up against much quality or many resolute defences this season in Spain, so it's a little hard to judge how they would deal with such obstacles. Hopefully they will win it (if Arsenal get knocked out) because they've been a joy to watch this season.

Of course. When Real Madrid is cruising it's because the other teams are crap, but when Barcelona is cruising it's because they are so amazing. Nevermind that Valencia, Villareal, and Sevilla are just as prone to losing against any crap team in the league.

They have already put 12 past Atletico in 2 games, a side that Liverpool managed two 1-1 draws against.

Yes, teams have folded against them, but you can only beat who is put in front of you, and thus far they have dispatched pretty much every one fairly easy, barring Numancia which was at the start of the season, and Shaktar (where they fielded a 2nd XI).

Ofcourse the EPL big four, as well as the likes of Inter and Juve will no doubt prove much sterner opposition.

If they were to come up against Utd again, I think the games would be completely different to last season though. Last season Utd were flying, whereas Barca couldn't buy a goal, lacking confidence and cutting edge. Totatally different kettle of fish this seson though.

You were a very strong team no doubt, but the difference lie in the style of football. Most neutrals enjoy an attacking possession based approach and find solid defense combined with counter attacks less interesting.

I'm not knocking Barca, because they have been fantastic this season, and they can't have done much more than they have this season. But facing Man Utd, and maybe Liverpool or Chelsea in form could still be a different matter although (whereas Barcelona would take us to pieces with ease).

Beating Atletico like that was impressive, but they are a team who can quickly collapse into shambolic performances. I'm thinking more of the Real Madrid game, where Madrid frustrated them for a long time at the Camp Nou despite injuries and a defence which had been woeful in previous games. That's the sort of match I can envisage Man Utd playing against Barcelona, but in a more accomplished manner. And as disjointed as they've been going forward, they've been formidable when defending. I think Barcelona would be strong favourites against any team in Europe, but I could easily envisage a couple of teams catching them out if luck was on their side.

Can't disagree with that. Still I'm not sure sitting back against Barca this season is the best course, because they'll bound create seomthing with all the possession unlike last season.

It will be interesting to see how they cope if a top team actually take it to them though.

Agree with what Sheffield Gunner is saying, something I've said myself when asked about our CL chances - this year the team is indeed completely different to last season: mentally, physically, and personnel-wise (Alves in for Zambrotta and anybody-who-cares in for Deco, improves the team by a huge amount). But the "kryptonite" will still be Man. Utd., Liverpool, Inter, or Juve if we come up against any of them in the CL knockout stages.

I'm a little less worried about Chelsea because I think they've shown some mental frailties this season, we can outplay them, and our defenders also won't have a fit/motivated Drogba to deal with unless he performs a big turnaround and Scolari changes his mind too.

But the other 4 mentioned above will be glad to spend 180 mins parking the bus and nullifying our football, then looking to grab a goal on a counter or setpiece...defending a constant stream of crosses/long balls remains the main weakness of our defense, and for Alves offers going forward, if Ronaldo/Evra are regularly released down the left flank by early balls from their teammates/keeper, Alves *will* get exposed.

Think Sheffield Gunner is right as well. Look at Arsenal in 2004, for most of that season they were miles in front of everyone in the league and Henry, Pires and co looked unstoppable then one very bad night in the CL against Chelsea and they were out.

Think they'll win their league comfortably and at this rate Messi will win most of the individual awards.
