I'm only saying this because I'm concerned about the EPL. I want you guys to win it.
I'm dead sure their are managers, who'ld rest him.
The hope is that essien will not sacrifice his usual game as much as he did in the first match to merely follow gerrard around the pitch. He may do, but I'm hoping gerrard has a little bit more space.
We are far better set up to counter attack in this match with mascherano on the pitch so theoretically torres and gerrard may have more space to operate in
I would like to see rafa start yossi and babel on the wings, just to offer a different threat to what chelsea will be expecting. Ivanovic had riera in his pocket because riera had no pace to get round him so at least babel offers a guaranteed, if inconsistent threat.
I certainly think it's well within our capabilites to score 3 goals on any ground, it's just more likely that chelsea will thrive with us going at them.

This is our best hope tonight imo. If / when he picks skrtel, kuyt and riera instead it will make the team more solid but takes away the chances of getting 3 goals.
At home, I really can't see Hiddink doing that or more so I hope he won't do that.
Kuyt will no doubt start.
Prefer to see Agger and Insua start tonight. Highly doubt it though and if one were to be picked it would be Agger I have a feeling.
Having Masch in there will be a massive boost.
Just hope we have a right go at them.

So..the hope is that Hiddink will have seen what happened last week when he got Essien to mark Gerrard out of the game and think "that worked well, I think I wont do that next week"?

Do you really expect Essien to do similar again tonight at home.
I expect Chelsea to go for the juggernaut early on try to score early on and end the tie as early as possible.
Could be wrong.

I expect the opposite, with liverpool really going for an early goal, with chelsea doing everything possible not to concede an early goal.

Under normal circumstances they wouldn't, but as Axe pointed out, Chelsea have no reason to play an attacking game. They can focus first on protecting their goal, and counter attacking Liverpool if they happen to push too many forward. Even if they go out to attack in the initial stages, I really find it hard to believe (as does cooper) that Hiddink will tell Essien "go on son, forget about Gerrard and enjoy attacking tonight"

.
Well..yeah.
Hiddink doesnt seem to be one for just saying "right lets go and attack"..
I just dont see why Hiddink would think that stopping Gerrard would be a bad idea. Essien is one man..the attackers can do the attacking.

Am I the only one who thinks too much has been read into the supposed man marking Essien did on Gerrard. I saw an article on the Guardian/Times which simply suggested that Essien was just covering the area where a Dm is supposed to be. No big coincidence then that Essien would battle Gerrard often since he also happens to spend alot of time in that area.
Regarding the game I don't see any chance really of Liverpool coming back. If they are to somehow make it then I don't think it would suit Liverpool either for Chelsea to attack them early or sit on their lead. Guzman suggested what is the best senario in my opinion which is for the game to become somewhat dead untill Liverpool really go at it during the second half.

Should have made it clearer...
Essien I expect to be given a bit more attacking freedom then last Wenesday. He'll still have an eye on Gerrard but the same extent as the 1st leg, at least that's what I'm hoping for.
If that doesn't occur Gerrard needs to drift out wide, his influence for us is so so vital obviously and if central he can't make any impact than out wide he needs to drift in and out from.
I'll make a prediction anyway as I'm off to study advanced physics ... 2-1 to us.
Torres and Kuyt goals.

In terms of this board, Essien can do no wrong and Gerrard has a noticeable group of doubters. Plenty of people will have seen Essien tackle Gerrard a couple of times and immediately thought "Essien is pwning him".

Well, to be fair, if Gerrard had then scored a penalty he'd have been described by some other people as the best player in the world dragging his team out of the shit again.

Yeah Essien seems to me to be one of the few players that gets universal praise on this board. Essien did rule the area and Gerrard was too poor in the game but I don't think it was a man marking. It was just a the result of a very good player,Essien, dominating the area plus Liverpool having serious problems in the area just below Gerrard.Six wrote:Super Madrid wrote:Am I the only one who thinks too much has been read into the supposed man marking Essien did on Gerrard. For me its one thing if someone on the board says that, but another if it's the same people complaining about the media fawning over Gerrard. The discussion is about 4 years old now, we get it.

If that's what they saw, then they are already a lost cause.

That's suicide. How on earth are you going to defend set pieces? babel can't head to save his live & Kuyt is 1 of the best headers in your squad.COTR wrote:De Guzman wrote:Haven't got a clue about Torres fitness, but risking Stevie (certainly if he plays him where Essien will take care of him) to do the close to impossible (overturn a 1-3 home loss; I know it's happened before; Feyenoord won once 1-3 away v Stuttgart & lost 0-3 at home, but that's one for the recordbooks; Chelsea is a different cup of tea).

Why? If he can't play then it doesn't mean he won't be available for Arsenal. If he is being rested, fair play to Rafa for getting his priorities right. Hiddink is too good and too lucky to give us a chance tonight.
