I think you're being a bit harsh on Cesc. Scoring two goals isn't too bad.

Fabregas - 28 games, 3 goals (1 vs Sunderland, 2 vs Boro)
Essien - 12 games, 2 goals (1 vs Juve and 1 vs Man City)
Fabregas goals/games - 0.107, or just shy of a goal every 10 games, all coming against relegation candidates
Essien goals/games - .166, or a goal every six games, all coming against strong opponents
What was Dixon on about last night? He claimed that Fabregas has everything you'd want in a midfield player, overlooking completely that he's been moved out of central midfield. Is Dixon so blinded by club loyalty, even when being paid for his opinion, that he's overlooking possibly the best central midfielder on the planet in favour of talking sheer gibberish about an Arsenal player?
Truly bizarre. The stats prove that Essien>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Fabregas>Song

Re: Arsenal FC - Summer 2009 Thread
Arsenal's young Mexican striker Carlos Vela has travelled to Manchester ahead of Wednesday's Champions League game after spending a day in quarantine due to fears over the swine flu outbreak.
Vela, 20, was told to stay away from training yesterday after a visit by some Mexican friends last week.
Mexico is the centre of the outbreak of the disease and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: "It looked to be a massive problem because we were asked yesterday to keep him at home and not get him to the training ground.
"Now he has the all-clear and today he was free again to attend training."
Wenger added: "It was basically down to the fact he had visitors from Mexico, friends who came to visit him last week."

What with international terrorism, climate change, the population crisis, food crisis, energy crisis, peak oil, domestic debt, foreign debt, increasing divisions of wealth and power, ethnic civil war, genocide, AIDS, bird flu, pig flu, childhood obesity, rising violent crime rates, higher taxes, lower employment, teenage pregnancy, single mothers, the gender pay gap, the privatisation of national resources, international government, inflation, recession and the serious rise in the price of sugar, it's a harsh world. Count yourself lucky.

A very funny rant from Arshavin's agent
Some true points (French diaspora rules) but a lot of rubbish (clubs are lining up for him )
Some true points (French diaspora rules) but a lot of rubbish (clubs are lining up for him )
Andrey Arshavin's agent claims that Arsenal stars Robin Van Persie and Cesc Fabregas are "jealous" of his client's popularity.
The Russian has become an instant favourite since moving from Zenit St Petersburg and Dennis Lachter says this has made him the butt of jokes at Arsenal.
He has also made it clear that there are clubs lining up for Arshavin, telling a newspaper in Russia: "It's not only Barcelona. After the game at Liverpool where Andrey scored four goals several teams told me they were interested in him.
"But currently he is an Arsenal player. Taking into consideration the amount of money which was paid for him and important role he's already acquired at the club, my client is not going to leave.
"Though - to tell the truth - the players of Arsenal are not easy to deal with. The squad consists almost entirely of foreigners. The French diaspora rules there.
"Also there are guys - like van Persie and Fabregas - who are rather jealous about Andrey's fast growing popularity in England.
"He was a target of jokes. Not very smart jokes, I must admit. But that's a football team for you. Such jokes are the same everywhere - in Russia or England."
He has also made it clear that he is unhappy playing wide on the left, with Lachter saying: "To put it mildly he doesn't like playing on the left. But at the moment Wenger has a problem in that zone. So until they buy a good left-winger, Andrey is going to play there."

Re: Arsenal FC - Summer 2009 Thread
What does it say about this team that in their two biggest matches of the season they haven’t performed at all? Still learning, and lacking the physicality and experience to cope, or simply not good enough at the highest level?
Either way it is incredibly disappointing to see how we’ve performed recently against Chelsea and Man Utd (and Liverpool as well in my opinion), although thankfully we still have a chance.
Changes are definitely needed at Arsenal either way. We need a strong defensive coach or no. 2 for Wenger who can actually add to our approach to, and preparation for, the game. It’s painfully obvious at times that we just don’t have the defensive awareness, discipline or organisation. Our defence lapses into headless chicken mode when under pressure.
Silvestre should never, ever play for us again. My heart drops every time I see his name on our team-sheet.
I think Diaby should have until the end of the season to play for his place at Arsenal as well. He has been here for more than four years now, and simply isn’t improving enough. He has been poor in recent games, and has no natural place in our formation for the majority of our games. Plus he is far too lazy. There’s a talented player in there, but it’s let down by a poor attitude.

Diaby has to go, you forget to mention he is far to injury prone as well.
Surely tonight was not helped by the fact we were missing our best to players this season (RVP and Arshavin).
Cant see us turning it around, one united goal and we will need 3.

Poor from us but Wenger has to take blame as I said in the matchday thread.
I hope he addresses this season so we're ready to go for next season.

Come on Sheff, perspetive. We lost both matches by a narrow margin. Tonight wasn't a disaster and we don't know the final outcome yet. I think ou're way too harsh on Silvestre re tonight, he had a decent match.
Diaby is one of these players whose progress seems to have got stuck at an awkward stage in his career - too good to play in reserves, but falling short in the senior team. I agree he probably shouldn't be a starter in matches like this - he doesn't yet have the nous to cope with 90 minutes of pressure. However the talent is there so how do you develop it except by playing him and getting him to gain experience? One problem he has is that he doesn't yet have a settled position to settle in and make his own which can't have helped his development and bedding into the team, and AW needs to decide fairly soon what it is that he wants Diaby to do in our formation. I think he's another Bentdner. There is a good player there somewhere but you have to be patient - and patience has been rewarded with others - Manuel, Song, Theo, even Ade.

Re: Arsenal FC - Summer 2009 Thread
The scorelines don't tell the whole story as far as I'm concerned. Wenger keeps saying that these big games are when the team will show just how good they are, and although they've lost narrowly in terms of scoreline, I really don't think they've competed. They've gone down with a whimper in both games and that is so disappointing for me. Even as far back as the Carling Cup final, we lost out to Chelsea's experience, but we gave it a better shot than we have in the last couple of games. Two big games, and we only really created one good chance. I don't think the players (or Wenger) are doing themselves justice. And with regards to getting a more focused approach to our defending, I think that is absolutely crucial. So many times in recent seasons we've seen the team shoot themselves in the foot by conceding soft goals in big games, or by losing their focus and concentration. It's something that can, and should, be improved.
Silvestre didn't have a disastrous game - and that's about the most we can hope from him. His positioning was poor and I just can not understand what he is doing at Arsenal.
We've still got a shot at reaching the final. It will need a monumental effort and a lot of luck, but we can still do it. We need a massive improvement though to have a chance.

A lot of big matches? - I agree he probably did in the FA Cup by not starting Arshavin but apart from tonight we've won most of our big matches this season.
@Sheff - it comes down to the expectations I guess. Given the youthfulness of the team; the financial constraints AW has in the transfer market and injuries we've had in the last few seasons, I think we've done well overall to be where we are. TBVH, I don't think we are quite ready this season. However, next season, provided we have better luck with injuries and we strengthen the back four.....

It's not just us who have luck. Chelsea last night not getting a pen against them; United getting a pen last weekend when it was blatantly wrong. etc...
