Atletico have said they have no intention of selling Maxi and if they managed to hang on and secure the 4th CL place I definitely don't see them doing so.

Well Hyypia is getting on and its starting to show in his game. If Rafa doesn't think that Jack Hobbs is gonna make it at the top level then a backup centre-back is a logical buy.

You've got Carra, Skrtel & Agger. Assuming that two of them might get injured you've still got Arbeloa who could cover for them.

Unless Finnan and Arbeloa are out and we end up as we have been, with Carragher playing right-back. Don't know anything about Amorebieta, is a centre-back only or can he play as a full-back too?

would be an odd signing, unless he's available on a free. even if Carragher is playing at full back there's Hyypia, Agger, Skrtl, then Hobbs, San José and Insua (who have both been making the bench lately) Antwi and Roque. And as discussed Arbeloa can play there too. With Deegan presumably on his way it's also unlikely that Carragher will be 'forced' to play at right back.

I've only seen him play as a centre-back, but given that he's 1.90 I don't think he's played as a full back.
