Those who don't follow Spanish football closely may be interested to see what happened the last time these 2 teams met in a Cup final (1984):

Re: Copa del Rey Final thread
for those who don't follow Spanish football closely, the Athletic Bilbao team consists and has always consisted exclusively of Basque players (even if this - in their interpretation - includes Navarra and potentially the French part of the greater Basque country).
Also, Barcelona and Athletic are two of only 3 teams that have been ever-present in the Spanish top division since its inauguration.
Barcelona and Athletic are the teams with historically the most cup victories with 24 and 23 wins respectively, even if they haven't won this title since 11 and 25 years.

the thing with the Basques is that they are the oldest living tribe in Europe and these guys are not just stereotypically Basque, but all Basques look like that, including the women. I think the Basque gene pool has remained relatively unspoilt from outside influences, so to speak.

Nowadays you can qualify as "Basque", in their eyes, by simply coming through their youth set-up. Bunch of sell-outs. Sounds real romantic now, doesn't it?

yes, a little, don't have a good feeling about this now ever since last Sunday we lost Iniesta and didn't manage to win the league. On the one hand, at least we weren't distracted by celebrations, but on the other hand, we played our best available line-up for no apparent reason and it may have cost a little our self-confidence. Also, our defence looks shaky and Llorente can be a very clever striker. In many ways, it is exactly the kind of striker we could use for breaking down an opponent like Chelsea the other day.

Living with spirit of 84, Bilbao should look to kick and injure the cules. Starting with Messi.

I read something about them having a Nigerian in one of their youth teams.

just checked but their entire first squad comes from the area, except for David Lopez who comes from Logrono, just outside of the Basque country and the other one is Amorebieta who was born in Venezuela but grew up locally and was born to Basque parents.
It may not be entirely "romantic" but it is a great achievement to never have been relegated despite their (perhaps not 100% but still golden rule) of Basque descendency.

i don't know what to make of this game, i just hope we win, but if we don't, bilbao is a team i could stand losing to.
it would have been great if the final were in madrid, imagine all those catalan and basque flags in the the bernabeu, it would be awesome

I read something about them having a Nigerian in one of their youth teams.
They've got a promising young black kid called Jonas Ramalho, who is Basque in the loosest sense of the word i.e. he was born there, but would still be classed a maketo, like us, according to the nationalists.

I'd like to avoid extra time and penalties, even if we lose in 90 minutes. Don't think these same 11 players can survive so much playing time after playing every 3 days for the past few weeks.

just seen an interview with King Juan Carlos and it's actually quite amazing how nonchalant he is being dealt with by the interviewer. Sooo different from the attitude towards the queen here.
