I've just been sick on myself.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1195940/Fabregas-right-Arsenal-need-dose-football-Viagra.html

Cruel for Owen to be a figure of fun

I was sitting in Nobu restaurant in London's Berkeley Square the other night when I spotted a clean-cut young man, with his wife and parents, taking endless phone calls throughout his meal on several phones and Blackberries.

He looked serious, intense and slightly anxious. As well he might, because it was Michael Owen.

Owen has become a bit of a laughing stock recently, mainly due to his poor performances as Newcastle were relegated. But I, for one, feel really sorry for the guy.

Owen has been one of the deadliest finishers in the game for more than a decade - 118 goals in 216 matches for Liverpool, 16 in 35 for Real Madrid, 40 in 89 for England.

And OK, his return of just 26 in 71 for Newcastle isn't as impressive. But Maradona could have played up front for that dismal shower last season and failed to hit the net very often.

He's also one of the most thoroughly decent men I've encountered in football. I sat next to him at a couple of Pride of Britain awards ceremonies a few years ago and he was charming, modest, intelligent and perfectly mannered.

Owen doesn't brutally carve opponents up on the pitch, hurl abuse at referees, get drunk in nightclubs, cheat on his wife, take drugs or commit the other traditional footballer bling-related offences.

He is a totally professional man and thoroughly impressive role model, who should command our respect and admiration - not our mocking laughter.

At the end of my meal I went over to say hello, just as he took yet another phone call. He looked up, smiled, shook my hand, then carried on talking urgently.

It may have been Phil Brown from Hull, for all I know. But it looked important. 'I hope he finds a good club soon,' I said to his family. 'So do we!' they replied in unison.

And so should we all. Michael Owen is one of the good guys and remains, at 30 years old, a very, very good player.

    Piers Morgan

How can anyone feel sorry for Owen, the gutless little shit is just about to get a huge loyalty bonus...... for nothing, and according to the papers we have to pay him for another month after his contract ends if he doesn't find a new club. silent

How many new clients are Owen marketing company going to get now?

What other players could do with a Brochure to attract a top team?

Fast, Versatile, sacrifices the spectacular for the simple, humble, mentally strong, hard worker, loves to track back. Does what it says on the tin. i.e. if he's got a reputation as a brilliant crosser & set piece taker, it's because he is a brilliant crosser & set-piece taker.

Madrid could make a whole catalogue for the players we are trying to dump!

Heinze - Fixture in the Argentine national team, played with top teams such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, PSG, formed part of the best defence in Europe (Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Cannavaro), lots of PGD.

Salgado - "Il due" once coveted by top Italian teams Milan, Inter, and Juventus. Over 50 caps for Spain over 250 appearances for Real Madrid. Great, attacking fullback.

    Hmmm....this has potential.

No 2013 edition - he's retiring. Weird to think that he's 18 months younger than Didier Drogba and yet his prime was ending just as Drogba's was starting (around 2005).

Great player, seems to have generated a lot of misplaced hatred. Surely he can't be blamed for clubs paying him a lot of money, or for the moves he made.

The liverpool management allowed him to run down his contract so he could leave cheaply to madrid, and the newcastle management made him such a big offer that no-one else would match it.

It is nice though that he can unite Kimbo and Luis for once, although they could probably argue about who has the most misplaced hatred tongue

He put in no effort here, even when we were fighting relegation you could see he was just waiting for his contract to be up. For a professional on over 100k a week to put in performances that lazy was embarrassing. Plus there is that thing of spending time out injured and then suddenly being fit for England. Rolling Eyes

He was never known for being a hard worker, he was there to score goals and still had a pretty decent striker rate, despite playing deeper than (the goal hanger position) he was used to. It's clear with your mention of "over 100k a week", that the money is a big issue to to you, but it was your management who paid him that, so it is their fault for firstly buying an injury prone player and then paying him a shit load of money (ie making an offer that no-one would match), and then letting him see out his contract. It really isn't the player's fault, as we would all do the same.
Didn't you get about 10 million in compensation from the FA for him being injured on world cup duty (4 seasons means about 200 weeks, so that works out at about 50k a week)? Take that off his "100k a week", do you feel any better?

Now think about all those Owen shirts you sold in Asia Wink
