F365 seem to think its James still, but in all honesty, I'd be worried by that. He's deep into the years at which goalkeepers start to look a bit shit and retire. He started last season well, but since then I personally don't feel that he's been particularly impressive.

England's Goalkeeper
If you were England manager and you had to decide now who would be your No1 in between the sticks next summer (and apparently Capello HAS already decided who his No1 is, who would it be

Green. Not the best keeper in the world but pretty reliable a steady eddy. You wouldn't expect a big howler from him. The rest you would.

Damn!!!
Isn't there a scottish/irish/welsh keeper that's any good that can be converted?

I agree.
When James is on the pitch, I always feel that a horrific, game costing error is just around the corner. Green may not be able to pull off the uber-spectacular like James sometimes can but he's definately a steady-eddy. He has had a couple of nervous moments for England, but I think that if we put our trust in him, he can hopefully become more confident in the role and iron those errors out.
James will almost be 40 come the summer and that's really the cut off for professional goalkeepers.
Joe Hart has an outside shot, but he lacks the experience that Rob Green has and I think that will count against him.
The rest are IMO, non-runners.
Ben Foster possibly has a very outside shot at it, but he'll have to retain the gloves at Man Utd for that to happen - which is incredibly unlikely.

Chris Kirkland and Ledley King would be in all my England squads from now til D-Day and worry about their injury history when it's immediately relevant.

Not for the last ten years or so. We were spoiled a bit in the past though with Banks and Shilton and to a lesser extent, Seaman.

Re: England's Goalkeeper
If fit, I think squad should include James, Green, Kirkland. Foster and Hart could both get there in future, but neither has enough experience that I'd want to trust them at World Cup (not that Green or Kirkland have much experience at this level, but at least they have several seasons of being 1st choice keepers in PL).
I think James should still be #1, assuming he's on decent form for Portsmouth. It's his last tournament, but he will have played so much with Terry-Ferdinand-Cole in front of him, and that should mean they have very good understanding.

Re: England's Goalkeeper
Rob Green,
as LRD points out - not the best GK in the World,
but he is good enough to play internationally for England - steady and unlikely to drop a howler.
Has been excellent for West Ham over the last 2 seasons

Hart wasnt deemed good enough for city so he shouldnt make it for me. Kirkland is just crap and unreliable he'll be lucky to ever play for england again.
I fault him in 4 out of the 5 goals

well you'd be wrong to, the 2nd perhaps was his fault and I'm not sure about the 5th but the other 3 no way. Let's face it, you don't have the best of recordds when it comes to scouting goalkeepers, and which of the other English keepers hasn't had a game or two when they've conceded a shed load?

Re: England's Goalkeeper
I think part of the reason people like Hart & Foster is that they haven't seen them enough to make the mistakes they can remember of others
I like Hart a lot btw, having seen him tonnes for Shrewsbury when he was starting out - but he's only had a season or so of PL football. Foster I ain't seen much of

Re: England's Goalkeeper
Rooney's second also. He's not a good keeper he makes a few saves here and there thats it. whats wrong with my record on keepers? All of the keepers have weaknesses but Kirkland is just not a very good one in the slightest and that was the match ive seen of him this season and he was a fucking joke. His positioning for that free kick was insane. Nani just had to get it over the wall.
@ debaser not true really. Foster has made plenty of mistakes in friendlies and in real matches for example teh arshavin goal he should have saved. But he's definitely a good keeper just a bit dodgy.

Re: England's Goalkeeper
Any keeper going to the world cup as first choice needs to have a) played as a first teamer and b) have a confident mood.
Re James, its highly likely that Pompey will get relegated this season. Is he realistically going to be in the right mindframe come next summer
Re Foster, as soon as VDS comes back, he'll be a bencher again so we'll have little indication in the latter stages of the season as to what his form is.

Rooney's 2nd was a hideous deflection, no keeper would have got to that. Kirkland is unquestionably in our top 3 and deserves one of the games between now and May to prove himself.

If he's benched then he doesn't deserve to be called up. But if he's not he is definitely ahead of a shite keeper like Kirkland.
