Who has the better defence - Inter or Chelsea?

Inter:

Julio Cesar + Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu

backups - Toldo + Cordoba, Materazzi, Santon, Zanetti

Chelsea:

Cech + Bosingwa, Carvalho, Terry, Cole

bakcups - Hilario + Ivanovic, Ferreira, Alex, Belletti

Granted I don't see much of Inter but as a neutral you'd probably say Inter would get two spots out of the back 5 (Cesar + Maicon) - but that said Samuel, Lucio, Chivu are all good players too.

Both have good backups - Chelsea with Alex, Zhirkov + Ivanovic; Inter with Zanetti, Cordoba + Santon

You should put Zhirkov instead of Belletti.

Both are very good defenses, quality and depth. I guess only "personal bias" separates them.

Chelsea's has proved itself on an equal playing field better than Inter's, so Chelsea's.

In terms of names who knows, in reality i am not impressed with Chelsea's defence at all. Don't watch Inter enough to comment on them.

Inter, only because Julio Cesar is more reliable these days than Cech.

I assume you're referring to previous CL seasons. Not really fair IMO since Inter lost it's CBs when the KO stages arrived and ended up playing shit like Rivas and Burdisso (who are now gone).

This season I would say it is Inter's defence but I don't know if you can simply judge a defence by the defence as a whole because the midfield is heavily linked in protecting it. With that in mind I would say Chelsea without a doubt.

I would agree with that, except Lucio < Carvalho. Carvalho is one of the most gifted CB's of this generation, next to perhaps only Nesta in terms of talent.

Why do you think this? I don't get it. Carvalho is a pretty clumsy defender sometimes and can be very dodgy. He's always been rated very high but he's had one and a half good seasons with Chelsea for my money still was slightly suspect then.

Agree with you here LRD, hes been the better half of the Terry + Carvalho partnership, however only for a short period of time.

Longetivity makes players good, not spells. Ala Giggs for you LRD and Gerrard for us.

If it weren't for Kings knees he'd be a far better defender than Carvalho.

I think people obviously go more on a name than consistent performances. He's not bad on the ball but hardly out of this world. Not very skillful, he's got a few goals in his time but mostly headers. I don't think many will class him as one of the best defenders to have graced the prem at all. And this summer there was talk of him going and nobody seemed too fussed. Not to mention he was 3rd choice CB at Chelsea behind Gallas and Terry for a year... people really do come out with strange things sometimes.

both Inter and Chelsea defended very well against Barcelona in the last games they played each other. I would really though feel that you should also heap praise on their midfields for making 90 minute cameos as defenders.
