I never quite understand that you know..the ones who can understand everything but cant give a reply in English.

I dont know how I could do that..learn a language so well that I can understand it, but not well enough that I cant speak it.

Saying that I am shit at learning new languages and wish I was awesome enough to do it.

Cause you can get a general gist of key words and fill in the blanks. But not be able to formulate you're thoughts in that language to speak it.

Do you speak any other languages?

Basically as I was learning Italian, when I was speaking sometimes I couldn't think of a word, but when someone else said it I understood/remembered it. Your vocab works like that, you have a set of words that you know, use readily etc, then you have a set of words which you recognise if other people use them but wouldn't use as normal.

Therefore in terms of the learning cycle your understanding is ahead of your oral ability, until you get very good at it.

Basically Nasri could give a reply in English but it would be something like:

OK, boss. I will run as you" say" me, but that Vidic, he is a dirty "sheet"!

In French he'd obviously be able to say a lot more about vidic Wink

It's also to do with how willing you are I think. I've always thought it was quite admirable that Torres and Arshavin were agreeable to give interviews in English from quite early on, even though they weren't that fluent.

There's a *huge* difference between understanding a language and be able to speak a language.

Completely different skills are involved IMO.

Writing in a language falls somewhere in between : you still have to have some active skills, but you don't have to know how to pronounce all those strange words....and you can think it over a few times, work around words you can't remember and avoid grammar constructions that are too difficult for you.

The speed factor is killing in actively speaking a foreign language (on top of all the other problems) Ale

Fair enough..I was criticising or anything. I just havent ever understood it.

As I say though, I wasnt very good at learning Spanish at school..wish they'd taught us all from a really early age. Like primary school level. I might've stood a chance then. Would've been nice if they'd bothered to teach us maths on a regular basis too actually.

I was once going to go live in Italy(couldnt speak Italian at all, but they could speak English apparently) for a few weeks through the school..was going to be one of those things where we each went and lived with a different Italian family..and then a month or so later they would've come over here and live with us for a bit. Sadly the Italian school bottled a few weeks before..our teacher told us they were all scared to fly as it wasnt long after 9/11.

Pussies..so if anyone wonders why I diss the Italians, I'll just claim it was that.

Well TBH...I didnt recognize van Bronckhorst either...the captain of the club I visit every home game of.

Gio might be born here, came from the youth, won prices etc. But Kuyt is our real son.

Cheers for this Otto, great stuff despite the trademark overreaction Laughing

Love his frankness, think he's just not confident enough to express himself in English yet. (Then indeed the Sun will have a field day...) Russia looks good from where he is (you don't say), French is spoken in the Arsenal dressing room (you don't say – "I need to learn French" is tongue in cheek, surely – or sticking out if you're him I guess), and most amusingly "I'm naturally a lazy fuck", was saving my strength for the second half in the Liverpool game and just saves himself if the team is playing the ball around in its own half Biggrin

    Cheeky chappie. Legend Ale

(hope he has a cold/nosebleed tomorrow though)
