    What a player.

The guy has pace, skill on the ball, is two footed, can finish in all kinds of positions with his eyes closed, and delivers in big games. I'm surprised that people doubt him after he broke onto the scene in such amazing fashion with Zenit in 2006-2007.

I'm absolutely gutted that he's not a Barcelona player Sad
We were the first ones to make a proper bid for him, but didn't realise his value and didn't offer more than 15m (initial bid which was put in the day after Russia-Holland in Euro 2008). Instead we bought Hleb Neutral

Even in January when Zenit finally agreed to Arsenal's demands Txiki should perhaps have gone in and made another offer around that price, even though Barça don't really need another player in the squad this season, thanks to the players' fitness holding up.

Enjoy it, Arsenal and Premier League fans. You have a special player in your league. No doubt Barça will sign him 2 years from now for double the price from Arsenal, our favourite feeder club Doh

And to answer Pierre's criticism of him from the other threads:

What a fantastic footballer who's achieved nothing at 28 apart from winning the UEFA Cup 10 years after it ceased to matter.

Different footballers mature at different ages. Just because scouts of big clubs didn't spot him, or if they did, didn't take a chance on him, doesn't mean he deserves the blame.

And the vast majority of players from Eastern Europe first make the step to a big league via a small or medium club...considering the size of Arshavin's pay packet, and the fact that Zenit are super-rich and don't need to be held to ransom by any club from the top 3 league, it's not a surprise that he moved as late as he did. For example, Allardyce was interested in him when he was at Newcastle in late 2007/early 2008. But they had no chance of signing him, for various obvious reasons.

I'll admit I don't know much about him before Zenit's breakthrough season in the UEFA, but him being under the radar till 26/27 could also be down to not having a good coach or teammates at both Zenit and Russia until the Dutch coaches came along and Zenit got bought out by Gazprom (late 2005/early 2006), who invested millions into the squad.

End of the day, he's an absolute class player and I get the feeling you're only writing him off because of his (lack of) size.

Don't be too greedy Kas, it's not Barca's divine right to get all the genius players Whistle . In any case there's Messi and Bojan who are younger and (probably in Bojan's case) just as gifted. You can have too much of a good thing you know,

I think, even if you'd got him, he would have been a bit of a luxury for you - as I said Messi can do pretty much everything Arshavin does, and probably a bit more in terms of playmaking, and is several years younger. Barca have the best attacking force in Europe, why tinker with it? What Barca might want to look out for in the summer is not an Arshavin but a replacement for TH.

No, you want at least one attacking player with height, which TH provides among other things. One thing Arshavin lacks unfortunately.

    You still need a DM.

For all the headlines, what has Arshavin actually done for Arsenal? It is Fabregas, RVP and Adebayor who'll get you fourth place, having to spend near 20 million on a player to rescue your season only papers over the cracks.

Never said we didn't need one. But someone with his dribbling ability was needed against teams that park the bus when we are at home.

Arshavin has already contributed shed loads. 6 goals and 7 assists already is doing more than papering over cracks. It was a necessity.

If you look in the Arsenal thread I've also stated what I think the team needs.

As for papering over the cracks we haven't lost dmestically since November.

What critical games have you won because of Arshavin?

I think it is papering over the cracks - despite spending 40 million on attacking midfielders in 6 months, on top of the 40 million you'd already spent on attacking midfielders, the best you can hope for in the league is 4th due to weakness in central midfield, an inconsistent defence, a decent but ultimately second rate goalie whose backup is a drunk...

The only critical games he's played in was last night and against Chelsea. You saw his impact last night and I've already blamed Wenger for not starting him at the weekend.

£40 million Laughing God knows where you get these figures from.

Nasri+Arshavin+the welsh kid = 40 million (more or less)

His impact last night was to be gifted goals by a Liverpool defence in meltdown.

What is your first choice team? Everyone has had injuries, and since you're always banging on about how your youngsters can beat anyone outside the top four that's no excuse.

It is irrelevant to the question of Arshavin's influence. You're getting confused, I am not interested in discussing whether or not Arsenal deserved anything from last night's game. I'm trying to have a conversation about Arshavin's influence on the Arsenal team. I asked you what games you'd won because of him, you brought up last night's game which was a draw. I say that his goals in the game you brought up were gifted to him by a poor defence, you say that the same could be said of Liverpool's goals.

Can you see how I'm trying to actually have a conversation about Arshavin but you keep avoiding the points I've brought up and questions I've asked?

Check the Arsenal thread for De Guz's post yesterday.

And I don't recall anyone ever saying that.

It was all the rage during your Carling Cup run last season. Admittedly, this season has been relatively quiet on the Wenger youth policy spunkfest.

Regardless, I'm still waiting for you to give me some evidence of the influence you attribute to Arshavin. A blind man could see he's a talented footballer with an entertaining style of play, but there are loads of talented footballers. What makes a player special is the ability to turn that talent into results (since the purpose of professional football is ultimately to win things). You hadn't lost a league game in weeks before you signed him, so he hasn't made much difference there. He can't play in Europe so beating Roma and Villareal had nothing to do with him.

Most of those games we were unbeaten were draws. Only when he came combined with the Roma victory did we start to fire on all cylinders.

Granted he didn't play as well as he could of last night but did he not score 4 goals playing from the left side of midfield at Anfield?

He's only been here a couple of months but he is still acclimatising so I don't see how you could judge so quickly. He's already beginning to have the same impact as Hleb but he's got goals in him as you can see.

You could see even when he got the ball last night the Liverpool players began to back off him.

    This is fucking hilarious Ray.

Kas starts thread making judgment on Arshavin saying he's brilliant.

I ask for some evidence of his influence on games and am led a merry dance of diversion and nonsense by an Arsenal fan.

I point out the merry dance, say I think Arshavin is talented and entertaining but again ask for evidence of his influence.

Said Arsenal fan that led me on a merry dance then accuses me of judging him too quickly.

Can you see why I now feel you're just wasting my time? I've asked questions, you've avoided them, brought up irrelevant points and then accused me of exactly what you yourself have done. If Arshavin were so brilliant then you'd have abundant reasons for saying so, the fact that you've just pissed around in response to specific questions and then turned insulting proves once again how difficult it is for Arsenal fans for people to even question their hyping of players, let alone disagree with it. You've done your club proud son.
