    Boulahrouz, World class?

You sure? I won't start up a Terry debate as we have a few of them. Very Happy

I agree with you on Puyol as well.

    Exactly.

Imo, the things that let Puyol down are the fact that if he's playing against a big, powerful striker (e.g. Drogba) he doesn't seem to cope well (from what I've seen - our matches v Barca and a few La Liga matches). Also, players with pace seem to go past him pretty easily (look at Henry in the CL final. Also the likes of Kanoute in La Liga etc). How often do you see players going past the likes of Terry and Ferdinand?

Thuram was world class, but as I say, before he signed for Barcelona, almost everybody was saying he was past it now (especially, as I said, after the Juventus tie at Highbury). He'll still do a good job, but not WC anymore.

I wont personally call him world class, that word gets used to much, what constitutes to a player being 'world class'

    i thought:

a player whose individual contribution influences the style of his team play and effects the way his team performs..normally leading to victories or an excellent performance...

For a defender - someone who is disciplined and can anticipate danger and without trouble resolve it .. plus can show leadership qualities to defuse situations and without any pressure can start an attack or get the best out of his other team mates (midfield and attack) with his individual performance..

Marquez and Zambrotta = World class for sure ok

Puyol I'm not so keen on. Excellent defender, but I think that if he played for any other team in Europe, he wouldn't get anywhere near the same praise he gets playing for you guys.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS. What I was saying is, your defence has come under a lot of stick from people (because of the way teams who could play quick, counter attacking football, were able to cut you open with relative ease most often), yet if you have 4 world class defenders, surely that makes you the best defensive side in the world? (if that's what you're implying?)

Imo, neither us nor AC Milan have 4 world class defenders (Especially now Gallas has gone, we have Terry and Boulahrouz who are WC imo, and Ashley Cole could be world class for us, but unproven in the Chelsea team yet, Bridge very underrated but not world class. Carvalho too hot and cold, Ferreira too shit... Milan have Nesta), yet we're the 2 team who are often considered 'the best defensively in Europe'

Boulahrouz WC but not puyol Laugh

Puyol is in the Top 10 best defenders in the world, and has been so far 3/4 years now. he leads the line of barca the highest line in club football and keeps it together so it wouldn't be every difficult for him to play for any big team like Chelsea and milan who sits deep and has 3 man cover the Defense in fact it would be a lot easier for him and every time he was out for barca we shipped a lot of goals even with Marquez their just goes to show who is better IMO, now you may not like he style of play same for be with terry for me but i still know he is WC

The only that one could say about thuram is the he doen't have the pace of old which is way he needs a run around him has he had in gallas in the WC and Puyol and Marquez at barca

I said I think Puyol is an excellent player. It has nothing to do with "likes or dislikes". Personally, I don't like Ferdinand too much, but I can see he is still world class.

I don't think Puyol would get on very well in the Premiership, with the real physicality of the game. You've already seen him struggle v Drogba (Camp Nou 04-05), and although the other "big, powerful" forwards, may not be quite in Drogba's league (imo), I still think they'd have a fair amount of joy against him (especially in the air).

Marquez had an excellent WC in an average team. I actually believe you'd do better with Puyol at RB, Marquez-Thuram CB and Zambrotta LB, but I don't think Rijkaard would want to chose this.

JT can't defend against Skill(Dinho) are Pace(eto'o and henry) does that mean he isn't WC he need to find a better argument that that he struggle against Drogba when i didn't even see that has all chelsea did was counter-attack down the flacks their was few times where Drogba had Puyol defending him that was left to Marquez and when he did i can remember him winning most of them.

JT are most other defender would struggle in the system that barca plays.

You say Terry can't defend against Dinho. How many times (in 180 minutes of football) has Dinho got past Terry? Once I believe. He got past Nesta 3 times in 20 minutes. How many times has Eto'o gone past Terry? I think once again (his well taken goal at the Camp Nou in 04-05). Henry again, has barely ever gone past him. Not bad for a defender who has very little pace eh?

Drogba caused problems in the CN (04-05) with his sheer physicality which seemed to upset the Barcelona defence and Rijkaard. It wasn't necessarily just Puyol, but I used him as the example.

I haven't slated Puyol in any way. I have said I think he's an excellent player, I just think that he is personally overrated (if anything because of who he plays for)

    Nesta's the best.

To say he's bad 'cos he got skinned once by Quinton Fortune Rolling Eyes

Or to say he's bad because of capitulations which are down to the midfield Rolling Eyes

I love people's knee-jerk reaction to Cannavaro having a good World Cup - great to see him being slaughtered midweek.

Truly one of the worst CB performances I've ever seen.

Ayala was robbed of World player of the year 2003/04 - an absolute travesty for anyone else to get it.

La Liga Champion letting in very few goals.

UEFA Cup winner (did they let in a goal ?)

Olympic Gold medalist (let in 1 I think ?)

    Copa America finalist.

Individual performances were awesome and yet he still didn't win !!!
