stupid spoilt little brats have now lost every ounce of sympathy i previously had for them. Hopefully FIFA will laugh the suggestion off as appropriate

It ain't gonna happen. Fifa aren't going to set precedents like this for someone like Ireland.

True - but that was:
a) much easier - there's shedloads of teams in the CL qualifiers, easy to fit one more in. World Cup is a rigid 32 team format.
b) much more exceptional. It didn't set a precedent that would come back again and again - the Liverpool one was a small loophole, that probably won't ever come up again.
c) involving a bigger club - Liverpool are one of the top 10 in Europe (generally). Ireland are a relative minnow in world football.
B is the most important. Allowing entry on the basis of one dodgy goal would allow all kinds of claims. Why shouldn't a team who finished 2nd rather than 1st in their group go back and find an offside goal somewhere and demand entry, etc. BUT I do suspect if it was someone like France, Italy, Brazil being kept out of the tournament, they would be more amenable to bending rules.

Point a is the biggest stumbling block.
Don't see anyone they could have 33 teams.
The only thing they could possibly do let more teams in who didn't qualify to get the number up to 40. Then they'd have 9 groups. I suppose 1st place in each group qualifies plus the 6 best runner ups.

Nice smokescreen by the Irish government and bankers to continue robbing the good Irish people of their money by continuing with the diversion of the World Cup near miss qualification match.
Them corrupt fuckos don't care about the image of Ireland as a country in the eyes of the world as long as they continue ransacking the nation. They'd rather see the country lose all sympathy as long as they have their smokescreen.
Ecuador got KO by a ghost penalty given to Uruguay in Ecuador no less, and by that offside Palermo goal at the death when Argentina were given an extra goal to beat Perú 2-1 prompting Maradona to stop crying after he was so close of being KO, and do his penguin imitation on the Monumental pitch.
Costa Rica got KO by Uruguay when a legitimate goal was not given as well.
Here's to them Irish corrupt fuckos!

You've got to explain yourself more, the other day you claimed the US wants to invade China, now the Irish government is robbing it's citizens. HOW?

They could have 3 groups of 3 and 6 groups of 4.
To get 16 in the next round you say all the group winners, the runners up in the fours and the best 2nd place team out of the groups of three.
But it wouldn't be particularly fair & they're not gonna do it anyway..It would set themselves up for the same issues happening at every future tournament. In fact, any game anywhere.
The only way Ireland could have had a chance is if France agreed to replay - there's precedence for that (e.g. that Arsenal cup game where they scored a dodgy goal when someone injured & ended up replaying the match)

What's also stupid is that the scores were level before Henry's handball. If the goal was correctly disallowed, there's still no guarantee that Ireland would've gone through.
Ireland are almost as bad as England when it comes to whinging.

Cheating isn't any more acceptable just because the scores were level, Ireland had every chance of qualifying if the goal had been ruled out. As far as they're concerned France have got something undeserved at their expense, and they're right.
IMO Ireland should whinge, kick, and scream all they want, something dodgy has gone on and ignoring it does nothing.

Didn't say it was.

They had a chance to qualify. If the goal was ruled out it would have gone to penalties. That doesn't mean they should be awarded a place in the WC though. At best they should get a replay with France.

True, but they don't deserve an extra place because if the correct decision had been made, there's still no gurantee they would have qualified.

I never said they shoud be given a place, it's just wrong to act like their whinging is unjustified just because they were level.

They're asking for an extra place but i don't see why they should get it when they wern't in a position of certain qualification. At best they deserve a replay.

There's no need for a replay, they should just have a penalty shootout.

Re: Ireland want extra World Cup place
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/dec/01/republic-of-ireland-world-cup-fifa
Fifa has dashed any lingering hopes that the Republic of Ireland could play in next year's World Cup finals, stating that it would be impossible to add a 33rd team to the tournament. Fifa's general secretary, Jérôme Valcke, told a news conference three days before the draw for the finals in South Africa that Ireland should not entertain hopes of being given an extra place because of France's controversial handball goal against them.
"I wouldn't say it's a nonsense but it is impossible," said Valcke. "There's no hope to give that there will be any more than 32 teams at the World Cup in South Africa."

Didn't they beat Georgia with a phantom penalty? I didn't see Keane complaining when he was lining up the spot kick and there was certainly not the same type of uproar for Bulgaria missing out on second place.

Re: Ireland want extra World Cup place
Scotland thought they came close and deserved a ticket for the Euros in 2008 after doing well against France and Italy.
Holland totally dicked France and Italy in 2008 and the only question was if we should take the cup first to Germany or straight to home.
Then Ireland came close again with France and Italy involved. And thought they deserved a ticket.
What we can learn from all of this is that doing well against Italy or France aint that bigadeal.
