And next summer there will probably be a lot more laughs when Madrid sell Higuain and buy Pato or Villa for a small fortune. Expect a Marca cover justifying that as well.

The final in madrid is 100% a painful experience for Real fans:

    Lyon owned you recently

Bayern has a Barca connection by Van Gaal and van Bommel and has the Madrid-reject Robben

    Barca: obvious

Inter has Sneijder, madrid reject , Mourinho, former Barca, Eto'o, madrid-reject and former Barca....

All players and coaches made huge impact in the CL so far...

    Ouch....

Mourinho may be former Barça but no cule really cares for him now. Indeed, he probably endears himself (and will do so more over the next few weeks) with his WUM comments against Messi and Barça.

I don't blame them for "rejecting" Samuel. He was terrible in La Liga, and I don't think Madrid's problems at the time were the main cause of that. He just seems to be the kind of defender who suffers when the game is open and skilful players are running at him...kind of like Cannavaro.

Cannavaro was starting to decline when you bought him.

Let's not forget that played most of the season with no genuine DM infront of him.

Serie A defenders have problems adapting to la liga, coz they are used to more protection from the midfield. This was specifically true in case of Samuel, coz Real that season had a poor defensive midfield... IMO Real should ve persisted with him a bit longer, Samuel had more than shown what he is capable of at Roma.

Anyways, I am glad they didn't.... Samuel, Cambiasso, Eto'o, & Sneijder - here's to Real Madrid rejects! cheers

The worst part about Samuel was that because he was a non-EU foreign player we already exceeded the maximum allowed by LFP and so we couldn't bring back Eto'o from Mallorca and sold him to Barcelona instead. Sad

Not a single one of those players should we have treated differently!

Eto: Because of the rule of not having more then 3 non-EU players Eto had to go. The problem then was more that we allowed Barcelona to buy him but even then we couldn't pay such a huge fee for a player and then loan him out.

Cambiasso: He was somebody I actually rated but he hadn't done anything special in his time.

Samuel: He wasn't shit as he has been portrayed. He struggled for sure but towards the end he got it much more together. However he still wasn't the best suited for our style.

Sneijder: He was too mediocre for too much of the time and he just could fill the role we needed him for which was a playmaker. He isn't good when there space is thight. If we played more like Inter then ok perhaps we shoud have kept him.

Robben: He wanted to go!! His father wanted him out and who could blame him when you consider that he wasn't guaranteed a starting place and he is way too good to play for a top team and not start.

If we get a final of Lyon-Inter I don't think too many Madrid fans will be particularly unhappy. I want Lyon to win it now followed by Inter. Have nothing against these clubs. Bayern and Barca though would annoying for different reasons.

    Inter&Lyon cheers

His father wanted him out if I remember correctly. Plus like I said no way would he have been happy on the bench and nor should he. The same happened with Sneijder who only really wanted to leave when he understood that he wouldn't start in the team.

That's what the Spanish press said to help Real usher Arjen through the back door.

Hans Robben has also been in the Dutch press during that entire circus and he's never said anything even remotely close to that.

I kept paying attention because I *wanted* Arjen to be sold : every time Robben is transfered, FC Groningen gets a shitload of money. (what we call a shitload of money is probably a quarter of what you pay a manager to fuck off)

Hmm Exclamation maybe Real Madrid should buy him back from Bayern ok

Don't know about that. Will ask one of the Madrid fans on here if they remember what happened. But even if his father didn't want him to leave it doesn't change the fact that Robben wouldn't have been happy. If I was playing Football Manager then sure I would have kept him but in real life he is too good to be on the bench and especially in a world cup year.
Unless he made it clear he wouldn't throw a fit if he didn't start then it was correct to sell him. Also he cost the club a lot of money and Bayern were willing to spend bing on a player we couldn't rely on because of injuries.

Like I said I think it was the correct move. That he has been able to stay fit for so long for Bayern is great for him and fortunate for Bayern.

IIRC it was pretty clear that the reason Madrid wanted to sell Robben, Sneijder, VDV etc. is not solely because they were Calderon signings, but because part of Perez's plan to the banks was that he would recuperate some of his transfer expenditure by selling players. And Robben was one the most marketable ones in Madrid's squad, with the highest possible selling price. So he had to go.

Don't understand the "too good to be on the bench" logic...surely a top club doesn't mind having top players in the squad whenever possible scratch
Of course there's the issue of how much wages these subs deserve (Robben earned a lot) and their attitude...but I dont't remember too much clear info about Robben really wanting to leave.

A top club doesn't mind have top players on the bench but do top players want to be on the bench? That is the question. Robben's father was quoted as saying that Arjen wanted to leave. Now, I don't know if it was fabricated or not. And it was after it was pretty much clear that the club wanted to sell him so by that point maybe he did want to leave.

Good point I forgot about that.

Of course but like I said this isn't some game where you can just fill the team up with stars. In reality those players won't be happy and what happens then. If Robben made it clear that he wouldn't mind playing on the bench at times then ok we could have kept him but for both parties involved this worked out better.

That is why I don't get the point of mentioning it against Real Madrid. Likewise with Sneijder. He moved on and great for him but he had his chances and didn't take them. He shouldn't have been bought in the first place.

I think Robben wanting to leave was a fabrication that was eventually agreed by both the club and the player. The fans were quite angry when Robben was sold and it added to suspicions that people had about Florentino wanting to get rid of Calderon's star signings. From Robben's perspective, I'm sure Bayern and their fans didn't want Robben wanting about how he was "forced" to go there, so it was better for his father to just agree that Robben wanted to leave and join Bayern.

I said it the day he was sold that we would thoroughly regret (as did many Madrid fans) and time has sure proven this to be right. You simply don't sell your best player of the previous season (next to Higuain) and your best player in pre-season.
