Quite an entertaining match for the neutrals. Benfica are a decent team and 2 - 1 away playing with 10 men for the first leg isn't a disaster for Liverpool by any means. If Cardozo had put his chances away it could have been about 5 - 1 though.

Apparently ref was close to stopping the match because of the firecrackers. Some landed quite close to the extra official behind the Benfica goal and one of them left a fairly sizeable crater. Shocked

A meh game. Aimar as a second striker does not work. Should have started with either Eder Luiz or N Gomes from the start and Aimar in place of Carlos Martins.

Benfica missed to many chances (same as against Marselha)

Very poor referee. Bad decisions all around. Both penalties are clear cut (Carragher was lucky when he hit Cardozo with a high foot)

Hopefully Saviola will be back for the second leg, but it seems very doubtful.

The only plus side is that Liverpool will have to be more attack minded in Anfield, and that may suit Benfica.

    Still 50/50 tough

The fireworks are a stupid fucking joke. There always some moron that manages to take them inside the stadium. I can see a hefty fine from UEFA, at the very least

I'm not sure that Liverpool "will have to be more attack minded in Anfield" is a plus. Benfica would have probably been better off losing 0-1 tonight. You see in earlier games what happens to opponents at Anfield when they need a result. They attacked from the start tonight and it could have been a big win if they kept 11 men.

I don't agree that the penalties were clear cut, certainly Carragher didn't deserve a yellow card, but after the Reina booking I wouldn't have been surprised to see a player booked for a foul throw or for being offside. They were both "home" penalties, you wouldn't expect to get them away.

BTW imagine the foamy groined hyperbole at OT if Nani or Scholes had provided the assist tonight for Agger.

Why do Lucas or Kuyt never get injured? No

For all Insua's frailties we will come to appreciate him when Carragher or Riera play LB in the 2nd leg pale

    Thanks Ale

Glenn, in fairness Kuyt was one of our better players last night. Hell even COTR praised Kuyt last night. Kuyt and Mascherano were the only ones who put in a decent performance IMHO.

I really feel sorry for Insua. I still believe he's a good player and still potentially could be very good player for us. I'm sure if anyone is bothered you'd find posts from moi questioning his positioning and decision when defending. That was regarding the reserves I was commenting on ffs, nearly 3 years ago. True story Laughing Ale He certainly looks like he's needs a break but with Dossena gone and Aurelio made of glass, he had to play far more games than he and probably Rafa expected.

I really cannot stand the Agger wank fest among a lot of L'pool supporters. Sickos Grr It's like he can do no wrong. I believe many are so blinded by his qualities on the ball that they deny any questioning of his poor defending. I haven't really rated Agger defensively for a long time frankly. Not strong enough. Not aggressive enough. Goes into challenges half hearted a lot. He was very poor last night defensively as well. No doubt Insua will get the full blame.

Carra was going fully into blocking the shot, there was no much he could do and he certainly wasn't trying to block it with his hands. Funny how Reds pounce on any mistake he makes. The amount of insults he has been getting this season is pathetic. He's coming to the back end of his career fair enough and was very poor early on in the season but insulting a guy who has given his all for us is for near a decade is uncalled for, Sami had fairly similar abuse a few years ago as well.

Regarding the match... like I said last night. I'm still confident we'll progress. I know I would have settled for a 2-1 loss before KO let alone after the sending off.

Are you joking about the Carragher penalty? It was as clear a penalty as I've seen...why does his hand need to be that high? And he was clearly looking at the ball.

Well duh he was clearly looking at the ball.

Seriously, have you ever played football Kas? It's a natural movement when you're going full pelt into a blocking challenge.

I do not think it was intentional on Carragher's part. When he goes in for challenge he always goes in 110%.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why a penalty was given. You're certainly asking for trouble by doing that especially with the garbage ref we were handed. But I do not think it was intentional.

I think last night was a poor result to be honest. I'm not happy in the slightest that we threw away a fantastic position because of our own stupidity. We self-destructed. Babel showed why you can't trust him, he's been playing quite well recently but what a stupid thing to do when we're in such a good position. As soon as he raised his hands I knew he was going off, it's Europe, you can't get away with that in Europe. He cost us the game. After that we were a tactical mess and it was horrible to watch.

Benfica are in pole position now, they will obviously score at Anfield so we'll need 2 goals at the very least with no left back and an no left midfielder.

Rafa's pretty much forced to play him out of position now. It doesn't matter though, who's going to play left back? Wouldn't surprise me to see this:

    --------------------Reina---------------------

    ---Johnson-----Carra---------Agger----------Mascherano-------------

    ----------------Lucas----------Gerrard-------------------------------

    ---Kuyt------------------Benayoun-----------------El Zhar---------------

    ------------------------------Torres--------------------------------------

If only Riera and Rafa could make up.

I'm sorry, I just don't agree with you. It's a blatant handball...not a visible hand-to-ball movement, but there's nothing "natural" about having your arm that high. Normally when you raise your arm it's to block your face. Carragher is not blocking his face. And what does the "110%" cliched bullshit have to do with this? By raising his arm high, he's giving 110%? Rolling Eyes

    Here are two angles:
