I think the powers that be at HSV only realised how good Jol was after he left. Having made a net profit of 20 mio euros during his season there, and competed on 3 fronts, they then went and spent a net 30 million euros and flopped. Jol's HSV only finshed 8 pts off the top and Magath had had an extra year at WOlfsburg to build his team. Surely had he stayed and spent the 30 mio as he wanted, he would have taken HSV close to the Bundesliga title.
I don't think Jol left because he didn't thin they'd spend, but because he wanted full control over transfers, which he was given at Ajax. Jol lost his job at Tottenham because another man was buying the players and I suspect there was some disagreement over targets at HSV and this would have left him feeling uncomfortable. But I can't see him going back. He's transformed Ajax and has them playing superbly. And HSV now have a new D of F, so Jol would be in the same position again. Jol needs to be a manger, not just a coach. At Spurs he had one transfer window when he was in charge of transfers and that was at the start of the season when SPurs nearly finished 4th, having not been even in top 8 for close to a decade. At Ajax, other than Atouba, he's also been very good in the transfer market. He's known as an excellent head coach, but this is only because he's rarely had chance to prove himself as a manager, but in the short periods he has, he's shown real promise. HSV should have given him what he wanted.
