Re: Will history be kind to BECKS ?
Well he's been riding the greece goal for about 5 years so I think that will do a job of buttering up history yep.
I imagine the majority of people will forget his bad days...as some people still dont accept he has bad days anyway.

Re: Will history be kind to BECKS ?
He was great for about 4 - 5 years, then starting believing his hype, his form descended and even when he tried he could never get it back.
I think he'll actually go down better in Man United's history than Englands.
One of our best players in 1999.

SQUAD maybe, not TEAM.
Midfielders like Robson, Charlton, Gazza, Mathews, Finney even maybe Waddle would come in front of him.

Re: Will history be kind to BECKS ?
Its easy to forget how good becks was in his prime.
In 1999 he almost singlehandedly (well, with help from a Schnmeichel supersave) took Inter Milan apart in the CL quarter final with his passing from the wing - setting up both goals that night and giving Pagliuca (who couldnt get anywhere near them) nightmares for weeks after.
He also did the same against Bayern at the Olumpic stadium, Barcelona home and away:
ironically his least impressive performance was in the final. But he was magnificent, World Class. In Euro 2000 he was also head and shoulders England's best player, setting up Shearer for the goal which beat the Germans in Charleroi. Did the same again against the Germans in 2001 with that reverse cross to Owen for England's 4th goal.
1997-2001 Becks was as good as they came at the time.
His dabblings in commercialism and the the derision recieved because of it should never hide that fact

Re: Will history be kind to BECKS ?
the fact that it is easy to forget, I suppose already indicates that Beckham will be remembered with less nostalgia than a player like Gascoigne or Keegan. Maybe he will be remembered like Waddle. Like his mullet, Beckham's style will also go out of fashion, no doubt.
I suppose even players like Keegan and Lineker have mudded their memory with their careers after their playing. The same is happening now with someone like Van Basten, who was a legend and now his coaching antics are putting his good name up for grabs.
I suppose with Beckham there is less chance of that. He might even become a support actor for Tom Cruise some time. He certainly hasn't the good sense, insight or wit to become a manager or pundit. We may be spared his (small) screen presence and eventually he will fade in the memory as a decent England and Man U player, like many before him and some after.

Would his life of been different if he never married Posh and he went after the celeb lifestyle?
He probably wouldn't of left Man United for starters.

Posh definitely changed his life. He may well have never gone on to become the most recongnisable face in football, but equally without all those "distractions" he might have extended his peak longer, or indeed become an even better player.
Credit to the man for how he has conducted himself though in adversity - when he was literally lead out the door by Man United (according to his biog) he still refused/refuses to belittle the manager or the club.
Equally, after being dropped by England, all too many eogs would have declared it a disgrace, thrown a strop and gone into early retirement. But Becks hasnt done any of those things. Angry and dissapointed he may have been, but he didnt run to the papers to cry about how unfairly he had been treated.
As a man, I think Becks is a good one. the cheating on Posh business doesnt make him bad either, just open to temptation and human like every one of us.

Re: Will history be kind to BECKS ?
I've always said despite all the awful overkill thats surrounds him, when you see the guy interviewed or running his football coaches, he comes across as a top, top bloke.
Much better than most footballers.
I agree with you about his behaviour towards us. Not a bad word about the club or the manager since leaving.

The only game ManU won against Bayern was the final in 99. All the other matches ended in draws or Bayern victories.
So I guess Beckham never really took anybody apart in the Olymic stadium, wouldn't you say.
He was a decent footballer though before other things took over his life.

"did the same" refers to getting an assist in that game with his perfect ball onto Dwight Yorkes head, not taking Bayern apart like he did against Inter. He did that kind of thing regularly and against top teams- assist after assist with his phenomenal crossing. That was the point I was making.

Re: Will history be kind to BECKS ?
I will say this for Beckham he is as proffesional as they come. He may have plenty of shit surrounding him off the field but once he is on it, it's just him and the ball.
Few players are ever able to attain a seperation of that sort.
