Re: Martin O'Neill Resigns
It can't be just the Milner thing driving this.
Ashley Young was always the jewel in O'Neill's crown and something must be happening there. Just hope it's us.
I think the board knows my opinion on MON (is STILL a DISGRACE ), Randy Lerner certainly backed him with cash to the point where Villa have made losses in recent years, so if he's shut off the taps, O'Neill has probably thrown his toys out of the pram and we'll see a big PR war between him and the Villa board in the coming days

Yeah bring back the good old David O'Leary days
O'Neill was good for Villa, and now the ship is going to sink to the bottom of the ocean and everyone in Birmingham is going to drown.

He is an average long ball manager that had alot of money to play with, that's all.

O'Leary finished 6th & John Gregory had a better winning % as manager.

O'Leary finished 6th once but he finished 16th much more recently. O'Neill has finished 6th in his last two seasons, and even if he has spent money the clubs up and around Villa have spend at least as much if not more.

He's an annoying c**t and I won't miss that fucking jump that he does everytime one of their air raids is successful.
Boo hoo, for the 2nd summer in a row a club wants to give me £20m for a player worth £7.5m.
I don't know how he put up with it for so long

Disgrace did pretty well for Villa in his time there. The lack of transfer knowledge killed him off but he built a stable team. Doubt they'll be better without him, especially if the money has dried up.

Re: Martin O'Neill Resigns
Id guess its all down to cash, they havnt spent anything and the fatc he has been on a rolling 12month contract shws he never felt completely settled (in terms of feeling 100% backed by cash), i bet he has been told he must sell before he can buy and if they get say £25m for Milner then he will get say £15m to spend of it....its just a guess though.

Re: Martin O'Neill Resigns
Really poor timing though from MON. Surely this is a heat of the moment thing rather than something brewing for some time otherwise it's extremely selfish to abandon Villa with 5 days to go until they kick off their season.
If Sven isn't the next Villa manager I'll eat my hat.

I really think it will be and i rate Sven, he could do a very good job but i thnk he would want some cash (and not just a monster wage) if villa cant give him something to spend i dont know if he'd take it.

Re: Martin O'Neill Resigns
Agree that money from Milner sale not being available to re-invest fully could be a major reason here.Sgoater1 wrote:

I don't like watching his teams, but he did well at Villa, although he was backed heavily by Lerner and he did too many transfers which didn't pay off (most of bench players, who are on high wages and don't want to leave Villa because of that).
Timing is indeed terrible.
Wondering if Hughes regrets taking over Fulham now.
As far other potential candidates go - what about Bob Bradley (he is not expected to be re-signed by US Federation) or Gareth Southgate?
Posted on Villa Talk, by someone who a few hours before this news was announced posted info about that... and got killed for spamming by other members there of course .If you'll believe me, the deal MON wanted for Milner was M. Johnson, N Onuoha, and S. Ireland, with the remaining £15m to spend on other players.
Lerner said no, he wanted all the £30m for the club.

Re: Martin O'Neill Resigns
O'Neill was at times a frustrating manager, but he definitely played a big part in sorting the club out when it was at a low ebb. Certainly a lot better than O'Leary. Yes he had more money to spend, but plenty of clubs in the league have spent lots of money without establishing themselves in the top 6.
Seems we're basically at a point where if we do well, we're just going to lose our best players to oil money & have to keep rebuilding each year just to stand still. So I can understand his frustration.
But the timing is horrible - I'd be inclined to believe the story that it's not getting enough of the Milner money to replace him which tipped the balance (although surely that could've been discussed and decided weeks ago )
--
Next up:
Sven - hope not.
Bradley - I'd never heard of him before WC, so I'm not really qualified to say
Fuck knows who'd be good really.
Perhaps an outside bet is Cowans being promoted from managing youth team, as there is a lot of hope players will step up from there. And if we haven't got any money, he'd be a cheap option.

Re: Martin O'Neill Resigns
Where's DB today? - oh there you are.
That MON was going to flounce out at some stage was always on the cards but the timing is a bit odd, to say the least. Liverpool, Fulham and Hughes must be kicking themselves collectively.
The choice of replacement isn't that great for Villa - Curbishley is about the only established name that springs to mind. O'Leary is still available though is he not?
MON will be up for the next big PL job that comes up. I'd like to see him at Newcastle, that would be one splendid entertainment.

Heskey seeing out his career playing up front for Newcastle would be a nice little story for the footballing world to enjoy.
Is there any chance of suing him for breaking contract and leaving you screwed at the worst possible moment Debbie ? Will the Man City reserves really want to come to Villa now ?
