That really was stupid from Gerrard. I think the red card was the correct decision, but it was so unnecessary for him to lunge in like that. You're always taking a risk making a challenge like that, but even more so at Old Trafford, and especially when Webb is the referee. You just can't give him an opportunity like that. Very poor decision making, particularly as Liverpool were in the ascendancy when the incident occurred.

So it'd only be worth a red if he'd actually broken Carrick's ankle? You see them given as yellows, but you can make a very reasonable case for red - he jumped in two footed and out of control. That's what gets you sent off these days.
