    Congrats to our spanish friends
    & respect for La Roja

    <Ale>

Our tiredness apart, it was well-known that you were the strongest out there but you also proved that when it matters you can wear the dress of the true top team with a perfect fit.

That 1-2 blow delivered with beautiful pure dry vertical effectiveness is a testament to the timeless football beauty, and you repayed us with the same coin we gave to the germans, only more precious.

ah, pro-tip: for your safety, two years from now, remember *not* to try scoring with a backheel on 3-0 up against any SA team ;-)

It'll be interesting to see how VDB transitions from the elder players of this generation (Xavi, Xabi, Villa, Puyol) to the next. Surely Puyol won't be around in 2014 but Xavi will be 34 and Xabi and Villa will be 32. Alonso should be able to continue but it is still worth pondering how much Javi Martinez might be eased into that role in the lead up to the WC since he is presumably the heir to that role.

Xavi is going to be a very interesting case since he might retire and if he doesn't, how much should Cesc or Thiago be prepared as replacements? It looks like the younger generation (Mata, Martinez, Thiago, Ander, Muniain) are very talented but it'll be hard to push anyone out given how successful they have been.

This is surely the monumental task for Del Bosque in the next two years. I expect Puyol will get called for a friendly match so he can make his 100 caps and have a nice little send off but no way will he be there for Brasil 2014. Xavi says he wants to continue and I think it will just depend on his physical condition. His knees are not good, he's had trouble with his achilles tendon as well and season after season takes its toll. If Tito rotates more than Pep maybe he will be in ok condition. I think it is 50/50 right now. David Villa, it will be interesting to see how he recovers from this injury. Some players are never the same after a major injury like this and at his age it might take more of a toll. We'll see. Alonso will probably still be in the squad but I think Busquets-Javi Martinez is the future for Del Bosque's doble pivote so it will be interesting to see if Javi Martinez has establishes himself in the XI or if he is still an understudy of sorts.

I think also it will be the end of the road for Valdes or Reina. It is pointless to have both of them sitting on the bench when someone like De Gea could go and be a part of the squad and have the experience of going to a major tournament.

Right back will probably be a place up for grabs just like left back was following the World Cup. Arbeloa might still be a part of the squad since he can play left and right back but someone else might have more protagonism over the next two years Azpilicueta, in particular.

There is a lot of talent coming through so it will be interesting to see how the Olympic team shapes up as they will be the most likely to fill in some of the holes leading up to 2014.

Muniain eased into the starting line up. You know it makes sense. Would definitely eradicate any complaints that Spain aren't direct enough.

Also, if Xavi does retire, or is eased out, any one of Mata, Thiago or Fabregas could take his place. In the position where Xavi plays for Spain (closer to the strikers), all of those three will be far more direct, and poorer at keeping possession.

I'd guess therefore, that while Spain will still continue to dominate possession with their midfield base - Busquets + Martinez probably, they'll be more direct than what we've seen here.

no need to worry about who will replace who. the talent is their.

Agree with a lot of what is being said, Javi is the natural replacement for alonso over the next 2-4 tears Api and Montoya will most likely fight it our for the RB spot

Thiago is the closest thing to xavi and Del Bosque clears see him and his natural successor, I also have a little feeling about pedro, since i don't see any Spanish striker coming up in the next two years, if he can return to his 20 goals a season form over the next two seasons and villa doesn't regain his form, I think he would be the perfect replacment for villa in the XI at the WC

It is interesting that for as many big goals as Pedrito has scored for Barcelona, he has never scored in a competitive match for Spain.

The real question is will Goldado will go to Brazil in 2014????? bounce

Luis Milla gives the list for the Olympic games today. I don't know that Busquets will go he was never a part of the U21 squad that qualified. Not sure about Alba either. From Del Bosque's comments before the Euros Javi Martinez and Mata, I think, are the only players from the senior team that are sure to go. Cuenca is a loss but he wasn't even in the squad at the U21 Euros last summer so I think they will survive without him.

My guess is it will be

    --------------------De Gea

    Azpilicueta-----Botia-----Ruiz-----Aurtenetxe

    ---------J. Martinez----Thiago

    Koke-------------Mata-------------Muniain

Seems ridiculous to me. Not like Spain don't have enough in reserve as it is.
