That was utterly disgraceful by Liverpool. We were in the weakest group by far and we're eliminated. We only beat Ludogorets at home with an invented penalty at the death. It's a disaster this CL campaign for Liverpool.

Can Rodgers survive? I've got $50 bucks in that he won't. <Ale>

Basel were a bit lucky to hold on at the end. with a player down, there's no way Liverpool should've been finding that much space in the closing minutes. don't think it was particularly sensible bringing on that kid striker - promising as he may be, that's a situation where you want know-how to see the game out.

The way he corrected his major fuck up of starting Gerrard in midfield, and then organizing it with Hammann while sending Slippery Me up front to run all over the place, the comeback, Dudek saving penalties, Xabi Alonso and Hammann bossing the midfield AGAINST THAT MILAN, Gerrard diving all over the place winning PK's and free kicks...it was a special night indeed.

Take a look at the lineups that night, it was a miracle! A special night.

Boy we were bad in that first half. All our defensive shiteness returned because for some baffling reason Jose Enrique, who's played about 2 games in half a year, was drafted in, Toure was out so Lovren came back in and Johnson had yet another stinker.

No creativity because for some even more baffling reason Rodgers decided Coutinho AND Lallana were better off on the bench.

    Lambert was god awful.

We played well for ten minutes at home to an average team.

We won one group game at home to Ludogorets and even that was in the last minute.

Shameful, disappointing return to the Champions League. I can accept losing twice to Madrid (away to Madrid we played our best in the whole campaign and deserved a draw) but to get 1 point from the Basel games is unforgivable.

Our best way back into this competition is probably to win the Europa League now.

No, not well described that... There was a deflected header that looked like it might creep in.. And whilst it slowly rolled towards the goal Townsend just shouted "yeeeeesssss... Awwww, I thought it was sneaking in".

Was that a good game to watch? I watched Barcelona. I always watch Barcelona and Real Madrid simply because Messi and Cristiano are freaks and we won't see players like them in another fifty years.

I understand now my grandpa when he raved about Valeriano "El Tanque de Casma" López. This forward averaged more than a goal per game just like Messi and Cristiano's production the last five years or so.

Santiago Bernabéu went to South America to sign López but he told him that he didn't want to be too far from his family (he was already playing in a foreign country Colombia and thought Spain was too far) so Bernabéu signed Di Stéfano and the rest is history.

Roma has an unbelievable loser mentality about them. Somehow I expected City to do it in the end but I really thought Roma had a good chance and then Aguero got injuried which should have made it much easier. It is amazing that no matter the coach(I like Rudi Garcia) they retain their identity.

Ligue 1>>>Serie A these days. Thats for sure. Again only Juventus goes through.

Puro is right about Ronaldo and Messi being freaks. Ronaldo, for me he goes past the fat Ronaldo to become the true Ronaldo, sure the fat one might have been more talented, but CR is doing much more and is never injured. He is a freak of nature.

    Agree.

Game like yesterday makes me even more impressed with Diego Simeone's Atletico, as they also had losing mentality and he completely changed it. Rudy Garcia and his team clearly isn't there yet.

Also, in general I really rate Guardian footy section, but this piece is just really shameful, not sure if I remember such a bashing from comments section - http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/dec/10/manchester-city-roma-soft-centre-champions-league
