Zoltan Steiber! nice finish. He was supposed to be Villa's best academy talent about 10 years ago but never got given chance in first team. Good to see he's done well for himself ok

Not brilliant but better team for most of the game and eked out the win. Good to see Hodgson willing to take a gamble on attacking subs when needed.

Need to beat Slovakia now and we get a good draw for rd 2 (one of the third place teams)

England look like a massive work in progress as usual. No surprise with Roy in charge but when will it ever change !

Good goal at the end to win it from Sturridge. He wasn't great but is comfortably England's best striker

Yeah but we knew Rooney was going to get pushed out by Vardy and Kane and inevitably he'd get used in midfield.. And he's done alright.

Alli has been average I agree, probably too big a step too soon. Still, he's been better than Sterling. Dier was nothing special today but he was excellent vs Russia. Lallana was pretty pointless today too.

I can't honestly believe Hodgson started the same 11.

And I do agree on Sturridge too, best when fit. Kane has done nothing, so I wouldn't mind seeing Sturridge and Vardy starting.

Post by Super Progress Thu Jun 16, 2016 4:57 pm

I think Rooney is doing a fine job in midfield. England looked much better in the first half against Russia. So far now team has really shined so they shouldn't take it too hard. Sterling should go to the bench for Rashford and I would give up on Alli just yet because it is useful for national teams to keep players who have familiarity(Dier,Rose,Walker, Kane) on the field. Sterling has just been useless though. I can hardly think of any good chances created for Kane. The goal by Sturridge was scrappy and lucky and so was Vardy's. I doubt either will be a huge improvement against another team sitting deep.

Wales weren't too impressive. Ramsey is coming off the best of the lot but it is hard for him or Bale to do much against a team like England who were able to dominate the ball. Against Russia they should be much better and with Russia chasing the game Bale has space to exploit and with Kanu to run the channels it should be an open game. England simply exposed how limited they are and they still almost got a point and I don' t think it would have been too unfair. England looked a bit unimaginative in the end.

There's certainly a case to go with the 2nd half lineup from the start next match with Vardy and Sturridge ahead of Kane and Sterling who have both struggling for impact in first two games. Rashford more useful as late sub (as might Sterling be for that matter).

Sturridge though, depends if he has fitness to play 90 mins, otherwise might be better kept for 2nd half. I'd definitely get Vardy on pitch from start, he's just got the knack at the minute.

Northern Ireland doing really well here. It's basically a Championship side vs a Champions League side in terms of who they all play for. Draw would be very respectable, win incredible.
