    Expected team vs Arsenal:

    ----------------------Mignolet------------------------------

    --Clyne--------Lovren-----------Klavan------------Moreno----------------------------

    --------------Henderson------------Can----------------------------------------------

    --------Mane------------Lallana--------------Coutinho-------------------------------

    --------------------------Firmino-----------------------------------------------------

Origi may start up front but based on Lallana's excellent performance vs Barca I think he'll start and I think Klopp likes Firmino in that false 9 role sometimes.

Not sure where Winalj will fit in - he played central midfield vs Barca but not sure he's going to be preferred over Henderson there just yet.

Defence is a bit of a mess - Milner has been playing left back a lot of pre season but picked up an injury yesterday that will most certainly rule him out for a few weeks at least. Matip has had a slight injury so I think Klavan will get the nod next to Lovren.

    Lucas and Sturridge injured.

    1. It's not bigger than the Emirates
    2. It's an awful layout for a football stadium
    3. West Ham have been selling season tickets for peanuts

Vardy and Mahrez not quite at the pace yet. Musa looks like he might be really good when he settles - very quick and good skill, just hasn't got the connection with Vardy yet. If they keep hold of Mahrez I think they'll finish top 8 or 9. Huth was a miss as well, that Hernandez looked shaky.

You have to take into account the fact some of their first team players just aren't that good, last season was an anomaly in their career.

Not sure - everything went their way last season it's true but Vardy Mahrez and Musa will get a lot of goals still. Kante will be a big miss.

Spurs have been terrible so far.

Not sure if Everton can sustain this kind of level for 90 minutes ("70% fitness" and other stuff), but 1st half vs Tottenham was already better than anything we had with Martinez last season. And no Lukaku and Coleman, which in theory should hurt us.

We were actually going to buy it, but Spurs pitched a fit, and that allowed us to get for even cheaper by way of rent. Upton Park is going to be turned into housing and commercial offices.

Post by Luis Mon Aug 15, 2016 3:42 pm

I think yesterday's game perfectly summed up where we're at at this moment as a squad.

We were really slow to get started - Arsenal dominated a lot of the first half without threatening too much though. Firmino was pretty isolated up front and we looked to play a more containing game than the usual pressing, fast paced stuff; maybe Klopp didn't want to leave us exposed too early or maybe we just found it tough to get going and playing the way we want to play.

Moreno has been slated by the majority of pundits and our fans and I can't really defend him - absolutely no idea what he's doing for the penalty, he may win the ball slightly but it's completely rash and asking for trouble. It amazes me how he hasn't seemed to have learnt anything from his shambolic displays of last season, particularly in the Europa League final. Then of course he's caught out of position to allow Walcott to score.

The Coutinho free kick was absolutely needed. If we had gone in 1-0 down with that poor first half performance then Arsenal could have killed the game early on with another as I think our heads would have dropped. It was a sublime free kick - one of the best I've seen really.

That spell in the second half, maybe 15 or 20 minutes we were unplayable. The type of football we played in the 2013/2014 season when we had Suarez. I know Arsenal were weak at the back but you could physically see how shell shocked they were. Coutinho showed the type of form he doesn't do enough on a consistent basis. When he plays like that he's one of the best in Europe. Winajldum had a poor first half and isn't suited to that central midfield position but when he got higher up the pitch in the second half he looked a lot better. He played a vital role in the Lallana goal which was a beautiful goal; Lallana as well is a player that must step it up this season and that's a good way to start - the type of finish he was doing a lot for Southampton.

The Mane goal was just spectacular and epitomised his start for us both in pre-season and yesterday. He was brilliant. I knew he was good from seeing the odd Southampton game but I didn't realise he was that intelligent. He's lightning quick, can go inside, can race down the flanks as he did for his goal and the finish was quality as well. He seems like the perfect Klopp player and can offer so much more than Sterling or Ibe could have done. He has that belief that he'll cause mayhem and he did that yesterday.

Obviously it's the same worries defensively though. Clyne was beaten far too easily for Arsenal's second and Mignolet as well is not doing himself any favours. This should be his moment; Karius will surely start ahead of him but while he's injured Mignolet has to show Klopp that he can improve. I know he saved the penalty but the same old shoddy goalkeeping was on display for large parts of the game. He doesn't have a clue how to come and collect a ball. His positional sense is shocking for someone who has played so much Premier League football now. He doesn't seem to understand where to be or how to be commanding when balls come into the area.

Klavan did very well - seems a no nonsense defender and Lovren too was pretty solid. I do think it's a full back problem but it annoys me that we all knew this months ago. Klop might play Milner left back when he's back fit but I really think we should have signed at least one full back if not two. Especially now we've let Flanagan go and Brad Smith.

Will be interesting to see where Sturridge comes in now - Origi is looking really good every time he features - he has a great maturity, knowing when to hold the ball up or when to get inside the box.

3 points away at Arsenal is a great start because we only got 3 points once in the last 16 years there and to score 4 great goals is brilliant. The defensive issues really worry me because I can't see us always being able to score that many and it's what ultimately cost us the league under Rodgers.

But it's great fun at least!

Top four leagues to get four spots in Champions League group stage
    Gabriele Marcotti, European Football Correspondent

Uefa’s executive committee will this month vote on a new set of rules governing European competition for the next three-year cycle, from 2018 to 2021. The good news? There won’t be a breakaway European Super League. At least not until after the 2020-21 season. The bad news? The big clubs from the big leagues have used their big stick to bully their way to more concessions.
Negotiations with the top clubs have been ongoing for more than six months. Sources say a tentative agreement has been reached and will be rubber-stamped in two weeks’ time.

It could have been worse. The clubs threatened to go it alone if they did not get their own way

The main upshot is that the four leagues who sit atop the Uefa coefficient rankings — Spain’s La Liga, the Premier League, the German Bundesliga and Italy’s Serie A — will each automatically enter four teams in the Champions League, without the need for qualifying. At present they have 11 guaranteed spots, plus up to an additional four via the preliminary round. Put another way, half the teams in the competition will come from four countries.

The rich get richer. And it could have been worse. When negotiations began, Europe’s heavyweight clubs — led by Real Madrid and Juventus — were threatening to go it alone if they did not get their way. Among the demands made at different times was a “wild card” system so teams who failed to qualify could get in on “historical merit” because they had won the competition multiple times. Or a new commercial entity — with the big clubs as shareholders — to run the competitions. Or playing Champions League games on weekends, when they can attract greater TV audiences.

Those who hammered out the compromise with the clubs feel they’ve got the best deal they could to keep the competition (relatively) safe through 2021. That may be true, but in fact they’ve only kicked the problem up the road. This will only increase the gulf between the top leagues and the rest. It doesn’t take a genius to realise the more the gap grows, the easier it will be to lay the foundations for a European Super League.

Complicating matters for Uefa is the fact that they have been without a president since Michel Platini was banned last year. Elections are set for September and resolving this issue ought to be the first order of the day for whoever comes in.

Curiously, the commercial success of the Premier League is to Uefa’s advantage. English clubs derive a lower proportion of their income from European competition and, thus far, most have been lukewarm — at least in public — about trying to extract more from the Champions League.

The clubs driving the changes argue having guaranteed “brand names” could increase revenue by up to 20 per cent. And that, ultimately, they’re fronting investment in players and bringing in the cash. Broadcasters and sponsors, after all, pay for Barcelona and Bayern on TV, not BATE Borisov and Astana. That’s fine if we decide the Champions League is a purely commercial exercise. Heck, if we’re going to do that, just throw it open to the 32 most popular — and economically viable — teams and be done with it.

But Uefa is a governing body. It is supposed to represent each of the 54 member nations. The deck is already stacked in favour of bigger leagues who get more places and more revenue. Yet the greed of certain clubs — particularly big continental clubs keen to keep up with their Premier League rivals — knows no bounds.

At this level, football ceased being a sport some time ago and is now firmly a sector of the entertainment industry. Fine. I get that. But this doesn’t mean the system ought to be rigged even further to favour a handful of already wealthy clubs from bigger nations.

Watching Chelsea vs West Ham. Average match so far, Hazard and Costa looks decent, so there's a positive for Chelsea.

Carroll on top is very isolated, as Valencia and Ayew(who left injured)/Tore are pinned back by Chelsea full backs. Since West Ham doesn't have any possession here it would make sense for Bilic to go 4-4-2 and put Valencia alongside Carroll, so he would have any option for his flick ons. But I don't see Bilic doing it.

Collins got a very soft yellow card. Wondering if this will prove to be important in 2nd half.
