ENGLISH BEING PLAYED?

Many years ago I heard that the Swedish group "ABBA" played the English like a piano. All the Swedes had to do back then was sing a song called "Waterloo", and play it to the English gallery time and again...and the rest was history as some say. I was too young to witness exactly how the Swedes did it, but that's what I heard, they "played them like a piano".

Recently it seems that yet another Swede by the name of Sven Goran Ericksson played the English like a piano, by telling them "England have the best players, blah blah blah". Many claim the English are still paying his wages, and that he won't coach again UNTIL he is fully paid 'till the last cent while doing nothing.

I'm sure a guy like SGE could have some dignity, and just coach any team from his homeland instead of continuing raking in the English millions. What do you think?

SGE= White version of Bogarde. Its a clever thing to do, I mean getting hugely overpaid for doing nothing..But as you said yourself it aint really respectful.

Played like a bitch, But he did take a lot of abuse etc in return. His private life exposed, set up numerous times, papers bashing him etc.

Sven did a number on the English FA, but they let him do it. If the FA were even remotely competent then they would have put clauses into his contract demanding success and enabling them to sack him and stop paying him if certain targets weren't reached.


Sven was responsible for the most boring, conservative, lopsided international team this country has ever seen. One miracle result against Germany aside, we were absolutely shit under Sven's management.

Funnily enough, in Eriksson's defence, we never looked like we might fail to make a major championship. You can go all the way back to Robson (exclude Venables of course because we were at home) before I can honestly say I was 100% certain we would qualify. I'm not even too confident we'll make Euro 08.

Eriksson's problem was that he had no real Plan B, when it came to major tournaments.

Eriksson's mathematical WLD record is very good, particularly in qualifiers. While we never looked like failing to qualify for a tournament, this set up the team to be difficult to beat (i.e. play the percentages, works out over 10/12 games in a qualifying group) but not particularly good at killing games off or being able to adapt to going behind. This mentality is wrong, in my opinion, and we can blame Sven for it.

So in summary your point is, Sven was unsuccessful and the FA paid him a lot of money. Wow. Wish I'd thought of that.

Roger, I think Sven was very successful with what he had to work with. He did take a grossly overrated group of talentless hoofers to quarterfinals in Euro and WC competitions. Not too shabby in my opinion. Sven was grossly overpaid I agree with you there, but I don't think he failed as much as the media made him out to be the scapegoat. Sven did wonders with the lack of talent he had.

Sven played them (the English FA) like a piano nevertheless.

You're right, it could be in both forums since it deals with internationals, and not only Sven sticking it to the English FA.

Puro - there are many fine young talented players. This country is just in the dark ages over it's football philosophy & culture, hence why players like Terry, Lampard, Scott Parker, and to a lesser extent, Steven Gerrard are lauded by the mainstream.

Yo TS! Why is it in England that the real good ones take a back seat to the obvious not as good as the media make them out to be. For instance Andy Cole and Shearer. Andy Cole was much better than Shearer. Scholes was, and still is much better than Beckham. King is much much much better than Terry. I take Bridge anyday over Ashley Cole. Darren Bent is a very good player, why isn't he embraced the way Rooney's balls are licked by the majority of English fans?

Heskey was a force to be reckoned with, but was wasted by English fuckos posing as managers/coaches.

There's talent in England, I won't argue with that. However the WRONG players are often given the spotlight making it seem you've got nothing but talentless hoofers.

Most journalists are based in London and have a pro-London agenda. Most are morons. Most are drug addicts.

We do have a history of hoof n run football too, so the best players are often not used in anything like their best fashion.

? Heskey was great for Leicester under O'Neill. If anyone 'wasted' him it was Houllier, the first season for us he was great, then just stopped scoring.

Heskey was "the beast" before "the beast" Baptista was tearing it up at Sevilla. Alright perhaps Houllier was at fault, and also the one at Birmingham. O'Neill is just one heck of a coach who knows how to get the best out of his players. I wouldn't be surprised if O'Neill goes after Heskey for Aston Villa.

Shearer doesn't like Ferguson and didnt want to go to Man U. Shearer seems like the kind of guy that gets what he wants. I don't buy that stuff that Ferguson would have persuaded him.

Ferguson tried to sign ronaldinho and didn't get him. Or do you think Ferguson didn't really "try" because he thought he would turn out to be that good

Shearer thinks the small picture, and that's the reason why Shearer won nothing relative to Ferguson.

Shearer is one dud if you ask me. Did you hear his WC "commentary". You'd think it was a 10 year old talking football. I loved it when he was miffed about the Cristiano-Rooney incident, when he publicly said he hoped Rooney decks Cristiano. What a moron that Shearer guy.
