Best Supported European Clubs? Empty Best Supported European Clubs?

Post by Tweesus Tue Oct 10, 2006 2:44 pm

Ok, assume that ticket prices were all the same, stadiums were of an infinate size and the team being played was of a similar standard, who would pull the biggest crowds?

We obviously know what teams have the biggest fanbase but are these real fans and also could they realistically attend a game due to location?

Regarding the EPL I'd say the best supported teams by quite a long way are Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd and Newcastle.

If I were to rank these I'd say Man Utd would be top, then Arsenal, then Newcastle, then Liverpool, then Spurs.

But how would these compare to Europe?

Serie A seems to get terrible attendances with the exception of a couple of clubs.

The Bundesliga gets very good attendances and La Liga is a mishmash with some teams getting very good crowds and others not fairing so well.

    so...

IMO the five top supported EPL teams would make the top 20 for sure and I think four of them would be in the top ten

    @ Roger

Neither Barca or Madrid get 99%+ attendances at their stadiums though do they?

Man Utd now get 76,000 for every game and their stadium is now the same capacity as the Bernabau

Not sure - if you see the stat link I posted Newcaslte had 100% and Liverpool had 98% and Newcastles ground holds 7,000 more.

Liverpool have to share the city with Everton whereas Newcaslte have a monopoly on their city and Northumberland ok

that doesnt mean they cant have more fans though, it just means they fit less in the stadium.

I bet Liverpool have alot more fans around the UK than Newcastle do.

When you say 'Best' supported, do you mean:

Worldwide 'official' supporters - members of the club.

    or, attendances at matches.

I think it's Barcelona now that we have won trophies. The stadium doesn't sell out week in week out but that only means the local fans are crap. There are about 1.500 official supporters group around the world and 150,000+ members.

I guess also that it depends on how many competitions you're in? Man U, Liverpool, and Arsenal fans are all pretty blasé about the League Cup for example.

I reckon that Liverpool would sell out 50-55,000 seats for league games.

So averagewise Barca are less supported than Man Utd.

I think that Arsenal wouldn't have a problem filling their stadium up to 70,000 + above that I'm not so sure

Rumours of an extension to St James' Park are circulating in Newcastle, now obviously i'm not taking them seriously as it wouldn't make sense right now for a number of reasons.

    But imagine this beast...

So this season unless Barca's or Madrid's go up, Man United should have the highest average attendance around 75,000.

One side could be expanded - the front part that has all the steps in front of it, but the lowest side has that line of building behind it and some of them are listed so I doubt it could happen.

you could make it a 3/4 beast though ok

    @ parky

Dortmunds is over 80,000 but they only pay a pittence of what Man Utd fans have to so its difficult to equate.

I think you are the best supported in Europe though and IMO if you had a capacity of 100,000 your seasons average would be about 90,000 - ie 100,000 for the big games and 80,000 for the small ones

I'm pretty sure it could be done, it would just depend on how much money you would be willing to throw at it. We would have to somehow get rid of the listed buildings at we would have to buy the metro station and fill it in.

I'm a town planner, it is VERY difficult to delist a row of buildings - not unless its for some sort of government project usually ie a railway or airport or something.

I doubt it'll happen, but you can still get 60,000 with the increase on the other part ok

What if there's big public support? I mean, most don't even know why these buildings are listed, they're just a bit old. Knock em down i say, extention or no extention.

    Laugh

You have to apply to English heritage and then they assess the buildings on their merit.

If there was enough support then it might happen - it depends what grade listing they are. There are three grades, II, II* and I.

Grade II wouldn't be impossible to delist, grade II* would be tough, grade I don't even think about it but they won't be grade I - Grade I are usually buildings over 500 years old - ie the Tower of London Razz
