Obi your not understanding he distinction between 'best team' and 'winners of a competition' we won the competition and proved on the nights we played the opposition that we beat them.

If you were attempting to find 'the best team in Europe' you would almost certainly have to include all competitions that particular team had played in, the style and ability of the team collectively.

You could also take for example a table of W D L of all competitions for a particular club, and liverpool certainly wouldn't have finished top of that pile.

Its not just as simple as to say 'We won the champions league, we are the best team in Europe'

But where would the fairness be in comparing W D L records of all competitions, given the fluxuations in quality throughout the league.

The European cup is designed so we don't have to through such an elaborate scoring system.

Exactly - only ocassionally does the 'best' team win. Last year it happened.

Worked his ass off though, so is one of the few who I actually think came out of the game with any sort of dignity intact. Fought, hussled and harried for 90 minutes, even if the quality wasn't there.

Totally off the subject, but Rio's goal was absolute class <Ale>

@fey, I thought it was a good game, worht a watch on highlights: with some moments of excellent football in periods, mostly from United; but until United scored Liverpool looked pretty decent aswell. I agree with whoever made the comment that Liverpool seemed to lack a player of genuine flair like Ronaldo/Rooney to turn the game.

Scholes was MOTM, Liverpool's best player was Sissoko.

Not sure what N8Wings's problem was with Carrick either- made a few miplaced passes due to the speed the game was being played, but generally Carrick and Scholes dominated the midfiled against Alonso and Sissoko - which is no mean feat taking into account the usual quality of these two players...

Hmm don't know who to believe anymore Laughing But I want to see the Arsenal game as well so Im gonna watch it then.

So happy for Gary Cooper(Scholes) that he scored in his 500 match for Utd. Not only a great footballer that scores Lampard goals without deflections but also the ultimate professional I think.

It was one amazing game, breathtaking, end to end stuff

Rio scored the goal of the month .. Scholes was at his best .. Fletcher dominated Alonso ..

Crouch nearly was taken out by Vidic and that 'player' Crouch should have been sent off.

Whilst nothing will probably come close to RVP's all season, it was indeed a sublime goal by Rio. That first touch was marvellous for any player, let alone a defender.

Still think he's the "shittest defender in Europe" ricardo?? Biggrin

Is that a joke? The match was so completely devoid of quality it's not true! The game was high octane stuff, no doubt - but it was poor quality football. Watch Arsenal vs Reading for the real deal.

It wasnt a classic, but it certainly wasnt devoid of quality. No game involving the ginger genius that is Scholes can be said to be devoid of quality ok And to use a well versed cliche: Rio's goal had quality written all over it

    Parky - that's just brilliant.

Liverpool looked heavy legged. They aren't a one-man team... far from it - as Hansen was trying to make out, but they were desperatrely poor today.

United used their superior team speed to great effect, keeping the tempo high and getting right to the heart of Liverpool's slow back-line. The only liverpool player who seemed to put up a fight for me were Sissoko, Kuyt & Gonzalez, who are all known for having good mobility.

Giggs, and especially Scholes were absolute class - and Rio showed that he's on another level to many other Centre-Back's *cough* Carragher *cough*. Wonderful strike ok

    Unfair.

Reina made a few good saves, Gonzalez atleast beat his man a few times and Kuyt worked his arse off despite lacking quality.

I'll give you the rest. It was the worst performance I've seen since we went 11-odd games without a win.
