Post by bluenine Mon Oct 23, 2006 2:11 pm

Some big games last weekend have wet the appetite for the BIG one this weekend... arguably the biggest derby of them all, easily the biggest intra city rivalry in Europe... so I guess its time to start the countdown...

Milan vs Inter this weekend (most likely on saturday, 28Oct06)

To date there have been 263 Milan derbies (264 if we include the 'Derby for Peace' played on 1 September 2002). The first was a friendly match played in Chiasso, Switzerland on 18 October 1908.

Little over 60 years later, another Madonnina derby was played abroad. As part of the City Tournament, the Nerazzurri battled it out with the Rossoneri at New York's Yankee Stadium on 29 June 1969.

AC Milan dominated derbies up until 1929, while during the 1960s the Great Inter side had its own way over their cross-city rivals.

    MILAN DERBY STATS (For Inter)
    ----------- W - D - L -- P ---GF - GA
    Serie A - 58 - 52- 56 - 166- 238- 226
    Overall - 88 - 72- 104- 264- 387- 420

Inter have done better than Milan in Serie A derbys, while Milan have done better overall.

Last 2 derbies from last season:

    Milan 1-0 Inter
    Inter 3-2 Milan

This is as close as it gets. What you can expect - A game fought like a war, a tight tactical battle in the midfield, relentless effort, blood and sweat for 6 months of city bragging rights!

    Cannot wait!!!!!

A great recollection of the derby by a fellow lifelong interista and good friend of mine - Paul "the riffster".

This is easily the best written "game report" I have ever read - it catches the feeling so well... the players may have changed since then, but the feeling is exactly the same... Fury in the fog!

Anyone who likes football, would love reading this:

Just on the subject of big derbies and cross city rivalry, Paolo Di Canio, who played in many derbies, wrote in his autobiography, that the biggest, by quite a large margin is the glasgow derby between Celtic and Rangers.
On the Milan derby front, I hope for an AC victory.

There are many ways to define big... and there would always be arguements on which one is bigger, and most derbies have the required amount of passion, more or less.

But if you look just at the pedigree of teams, in terms of how big the two teams are, there are NO bigger derbies than this one. These teams have consistantly been among the best in europe for almost a century now, and they have been huge rivals. It doesn't get any bigger than this, my friend.

Anyways, this thread is not about what is bigger... this is about the derby, Milan vs Inter.

@bluenine.I think that generally people find their own derbies the bigger games. In Portugal Benfica-Sporting-Porto games are all bigger than the Milan derby.
But still, thats a different debate.
I hope you enjoy the game, even if I would like a different result to you.

SLB & Deano, as you may have noticed, I have moderated some of your insightful posts out of this thread... while they may have been extremely mature literature worthy of inspiring intellectual euphoria, you will agree that those were a bit off topic...

You guys still want to proclaim your love for each other, go get a room. Please keep the discussion here to the derby.... hey its only fair... afterall, I don't insult your religion!! Wink

Hopefully this time the fireworks will be started by the players...

    Crespo vs Inzaghi
    Figo vs Kaka
    Ibra vs Gilardino
    Stankovic vs Seedorf
    Vieira vs Gattuso
    and so on.

Its a tense, but totally mouthwatering tie.

I guess I'll miss sunday's games and make up. But its unreasonable to expect an Inter fan to miss the derby!! Why do some women have a problem in understanding that??
