I didn't say you can't use the stat, I am saying that direct assists are not the end all and be all of that position. The person earning the assist is most often the person squaring it 5 yards and the real assist should go to the defence splitting pass that got him in that positon.
Flamini's goal against Liverpool is a good example of that.

It depends what position the player plays in and also how teams line up against you and the quality of the personnel around you
